If someone you know has been sextorted, we are here to help. This is happening to thousands of youth and young adults. Any threats they receive are tactics to get money or sexual pictures from them. Regardless of whether money has been paid or sexual pictures have been shared,
the most effective action has been to stop communication and to not give into any further threats.
Be aware that when communication stops, these criminals may try to increase the level of threats to get their target to comply –
this is just a control tactic. It is important not to give in to these escalating demands. There may also be contact by multiple accounts in an effort to apply pressure to comply. These are all control tactics to get their target to pay money or send additional sexual pictures. Even though it can be very scary, we are seeing the
most effective way to stop it and reduce harm is to stop contact.
Please note our office hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm Central Time. Should we need further information, we will connect with you as soon as we can.
Suggestions of steps to take in the meantime:
- Do not give into any demands being made. Giving into demands, like money or more pictures, usually leads to more and more demands, which may worsen the situation.
- Stop communication: This may mean deactivating any online accounts being used to communicate, blocking them from any further contact, and continuing to block any other accounts that they may create.
- If applicable, keep any pictures or videos of the youth that this person might have in a secure place (if you have them).
- Save copies of any harassment or threats they have sent as well as any identifying information you have about the user (usernames, phone numbers, email addresses, etc.).
If there are any concerns of physical danger, it is important that you call your local police to tell them what is going on so that they can help.
