Bobby Charlton, of Manchester United and England fame, sadly passed away yesterday. He was an icon of British football, ranking alongside greats such as Bobby Moore, George Best, Jimmy Greaves and Sir Stanley Matthews (among others). Also an icon among the world's greatest, such as Pele, Eusebio, Puskas, Cruyff and more recently the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
He always led from the front and was a leading light in England's 1966 World Cup victory over West Germany, by 4 goals to 2. Although he never scored himself in that match, he led the line bravely and did so on many occasions. His 106 caps and 49 goals, which stood as English record stats for a long time, is testament to his greatness.
He was awarded the OBE in 1969 and the CBE in 1974, and in 1994 he was made a Knight Bachelor for his services to sport. He will be sadly missed. R.I.P. Sir Bobby.
