Stories are irrelevant?

[FONT=&quot]Just had the oddest conversation with a colleague (who is also a gamer) about the episode from the big bang theory. The conversation took an odd turn and mentioned that "stories" in video games, in general, are similarly irrelevant seeing that skipping the whole thing doesn't prevent the player from finishing the game, seeing that most of them have some form of "guid" to tell them what to do (arrow, compass, to-do list, etc...).
I'm gearing up for "round 2" next week but I can't seem to disapprove this. Anyone has any games that can't be completed without at least knowing the general idea of the story??

Redefine completing the game.

Without a story, there is no world. Even in games like rogue lites where the world is completely different every time you load it in, there is still backstory to what is happening or has happened. If you don't have a general grasp of what you're there to do, there is no goal and therefore the game cannot be truly completed.
