Unwanted 'gifts' from Cats

I know our cat is following his natural instincts and thinks he's bringing us presents but the amount of animals he's bringing in lately is crazy. He's moved from a very busy residential area to a house right next to a river where he has an abundance of small animals to hunt and is in his element. These gifts aren't always dead either trapping his live gifts is also proving a challenge.
Is there anything at all you guys can come up with to deter him from doing this so often? I don't mind the odd mouse/bird/frog but he needs to calm down.

Unfortunately I don't think much can be done because cats are natural predators. What I think might help is to attached a colourful collar with bells (or some sort of noise maker) to give their preys a heads up.

Another option is keeping your cat indoors, but I think you'll want him to venture outside from time to time.

Hope that helps a little.
