A same-sex pair of flamingos has successfully hatched an egg at a Devon zoo, staff say. 🦩🦩

Paignton Zoo said it was also its first round of Chilean flamingo chicks since 2018.

The new additions were the offspring of several flamingo couples who were named by the public earlier this year, including the same-sex pair, Curtis and Arthur.

Although it is not known how Curtis and Arthur acquired the egg, staff said the most likely scenario was that the egg "was abandoned by another couple".

Birds curator Pete Smallbones said same-sex parenting was a "known phenomenon" in flamingos.

He said: “We aren’t entirely sure how this has come about, although it is a known phenomenon in Chilean flamingos, as well as other bird flocks.

"The most likely scenario is that the egg was abandoned by another couple, so this pair have adopted it.”

Other named couples that have hatched chicks include Florence and Flame, Frenchie and Del, and Flossie and Lando. These flamingos were all named by the public earlier in the year in order to better document the couples as their paired up over the summer. The initiative, named Love Lagoon, in homage to the reality TV series Love Island, has seen frequent updates posted on the zoo’s social media accounts.

Flamingo eggs hatch after a period of about 28 days, where they are incubated on mud pile nests by both parents.

Mr Smallbones said staff were "pleased at the success of this year’s breeding programme so far". He said: "It’s a testament to the skill and hard work put in by the bird team, and we are hopeful that we may see more eggs hatch over the coming days and weeks.”

Chilean flamingos are native to south America, and can be found in shallow lakes across various countries. According to the zoo, the species is declining in the wild, external due to a number of factors, including egg-harvesting, disturbance by tourism and habitat degradation due to mining.

Performers working in the games industry have spoken of their distress at being asked to work on explicit content without notice, including a scene featuring a sexual assault.

Sex scenes are common in modern games - and are often made by filming human actors who are then digitised into game characters.

But performers have told the BBC a culture of secrecy around projects - where scripts are often not shared until the last moment - means they frequently do not know in advance that scenes may involve intimate acts.

They describe feeling "shaken" and "upset" after acting them out.

Hacker tried to dodge child support by breaking into registry to fake his death, prosecutors say

LONDON, Ky. -- A Kentucky man attempted to fake his death to avoid paying child support obligations by hacking into state registries and falsifying official records, federal prosecutors said.

Jesse Kipf, 39, of Somerset, was sentenced Monday to nine years in federal prison after reaching a plea agreement where he admitted going to great lengths to avoid child support payments.

Kipf's scheme began in January 2023 when he accessed Hawaii's death registry system by using the username and password of a doctor living in another state, according to a media release from Carlton Shier, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky. Once inside the system, Kipf created a case for his own death and completed a worksheet for a death certificate in that state, the federal prosecutor said.

The filing resulted in Kipf being registered as a deceased person in several government databases, the release said. Kipf also accessed other state registry systems and private networks using credentials taken from real people, and attempted to sell the access on the dark web, prosecutors said.

“Kipf admitted that he faked his own death, in part, to avoid his outstanding child support obligations,” prosecutors said.

Kipf was arrested in November and pleaded guilty in April to federal charges of aggravated identity theft and computer fraud. He was sentenced in U.S. District Court in London on Monday.

Kipf divorced in 2008 and he was deployed to Iraq for nearly a year between 2007 and 2008, according to court records.

He must pay more than $195,000 in restitution for damage to computer systems and the remaining total of his child support, the government said.

Chief Constable Jo Farrell has insisted those accused of serious sex offences who declare as a transgender woman will be recorded as a man.


"You can only commit that crime as a man", she said.

In Scotland, rape is defined in law as penetration by a penis without consent.

I read this earlier. Should never have been an issue in the first place. and now they're getting some heat for the change in policy but saying the convicts are "banned from having the chance to self-identify" leaves it wide open to attack and distracts from the point that rapists are scum.

Being realistic and saying something like this would at least make it clear and difficult to argue against:

"If someone is accused of rape, they'll be tried under the law. Everyone have a right to self-identify however they choose to but the State has an obligation to protect others from convicted rapists and a right to decide where convicts are sent to prison. In the case of a woman being raped, that will mean the rapist goes to a prison that may not align with their self-identification. Under no circumstances will a rape convict be sent to a women's prison"

The Archbishop of Canterbury has called the idea of assisted dying "dangerous" and suggested it would lead to a “slippery slope” where more people would feel compelled to have their life ended medically.

The head of the Church of England was speaking with the BBC ahead of the first reading in parliament of a bill that would give terminally ill people in England and Wales the right to end their lives.

The MP championing the bill has told the BBC she disagrees with the archbishop’s “slippery slope” argument, saying their proposal is for people who are terminally ill and suffering at the end of their life.

Polling in recent years has consistently shown 60-75% of the British public supports such a law.

Elon Musk has said he will give away $1m (£766,000) a day to a registered voter in the key swing state of Pennsylvania until the US presidential election in November.

The winner will be chosen at random from those who sign a pro-constitution petition by Mr Musk’s campaign group AmericaPAC which he set up to support Republican nominee Donald Trump's bid to return to the White House.

The first lottery-style cheque was given away to a surprised-looking attendee at a town hall event on Saturday night.

The giveaway will effectively help to encourage potential Trump voters to engage in the campaign during the tense final weeks of the presidential race ahead of the vote on 5 November.
 
A woman says she was "slightly disappointed" after mistaking the bright colourful lights of a nearby tomato factory for a mystical aurora.

Dee Harrison, 56, of Ipswich, uploaded three images to social media of what she believed was a Northern Lights-style phenomenon in the sky above nearby Bramford.

The pictures, showing a pink and red glow, piqued the interest of hundreds of people, with many praising the "impressive" snaps, but all was not as it seemed.

The "beautiful" glare - seen early in the morning on Wednesday - actually came from Suffolk Sweet Tomatoes’ LED light units, which are used to encourage the growth of its stock.
