If the bat costs $1 more than the ball, we have the equivalent of 2 balls + $1.00, i.e. the bat costs the same as the ball (x) plus an additional $1.00.

2x + $1 = $1.10
2x = $0.10
x = $0.05

In words, the ball is $0.05. The bat, being one dollar more, is $1.05. Together, the bat and the ball are $1.10.

Do it in reverse.

The ball costs $0.5

The bat costs exactly $1 more than the ball.

$0.05 + exactly $1.00 = $1.05
+$0.05 for the ball = $1.10

That’s how I got it anyway, but I’m told my mathematical brain is backwards
