Use of Mega Links in Chat / How it affects rooms

Hey there everyone! I've been an on and off user of this site and my latest experience hasnt been to pleasent. It looks like there has been a lot of extra spam in these chats around not only selling of different services, but also trading mega links for either appropriate or inappropriate materials. So I went onto some of the different rooms to see how they handled mega links (these links allow you to send and revieve folders full of pictures or videos). The teen chat did the best job of handling this, where it was a permenant ip ban for posting a full link, however other rooms still let you enter them even though your banned. My suggestion is the following. A) if a user is ip banned from one room, why should they be allowed in others? Especially if they are distributing inappropriate content. All rooms should be following suit. B) more use of the auto banner, there has been a LOT of ways to circumvent typing in specific words or phrases by using other keyboard marks such as . / _ in between words that are banned in the chat rooms. In my opinion, wouldnt it be better to try and improve the auto banner when admins arent on?

Other than that, if anybody else has other tips or things to add please do! This is half me making some of these problems aware, and half an annoyed rant because this place isnt quite what I remember it being. But hey worse things have happened, so hope you were able to read this, and post your take or improvments, thanks and have a good day!

I appreciate your comment. Ill leave aspects of filters etc to those better informed, but the reason we have mods in every room is to get rid of creeps. At present, there is no system Im aware of to make every ban for those links etc apply to other rooms. If a system existed where trolls/creeps etc could be prevented from the whole site it would be. Those links posters are usually guests that respawn regularly.

At one time in classic, bans and (perhaps even kicks), stopped users from entering several rooms on site at the same time.

Hey thanks I appreciate it! The other thing I would like to mention is, some of the rooms have specific rules against the posting of links, whereas some don't. Why is this? I'm only slightly aware of how this site works behind the scene, but does each room have an overarching mod who makes the rules? Or are rules given by the "Chat Master" and then enforced in each room?

Ah I guess I do understand how there is just not a system in place to ban someone from one room and make it apply to all, but if a user is being inappropriate enough to be ip banned from one room, would it not be possible to ip ban them from the site? Or does this go into some of the frustration of how some users are bypassing this with vpn use?

@Casca, hey there. Thanks so much for your input and caring enough to take the time to post this.

The spam ban / auto ban filter is a tricky one. Using your example of "mega," there are infinite ways that people can type this and evade the censor. Although we can try to add variations of this word, there will always be more out there and we run into disrupting regular innocent chat at its expense. It's also hard to censor the word itself (and we can't use the spam ban filter for it because it would automatically ban a lot of innocent people in the crossfire). An example of this would be accidentally banning someone that was excited about their new high megapixel camera or someone getting a new fancy high megahertz processor for their computer. There is a pretty high amount of reliance on the admins to ban the offending ******** by hand, mods to kick the offending ******** and report them for a ban, and ******** to report messages by the offending ******** for the mods to review. It's definitely not a perfect system, but we do our best to keep the balance between maintaining a safe environment where predators are removed and maintaining a pleasant place to chat where it doesn't take 20 tries to convey what you're trying to say without getting caught in the censor or ban filter.

I'm sure someone else will come along with a more productive reply, but I did want to at least say thank you for caring and take a moment to explain part of why the system exists that's currently in place.

And for an added bonus, here are a few words that you can't say in the room I mod without getting hit by the censor:
- Circumference
- Circumvent
- Cucumber
- Cumbersome
- Document
- Drape
- Grapefruit
- Scrape
- Scum
- Trapezoid

each room has its own specific set of rules. Those are created by the respective room Admins. The simple answer from my perspective is, if creeps, trolls and idiots could be kept out in perpetuity, it would be done already. In my room, we dont allow external links. Period. And since the vast majority if not all of the mega posters are creeps, posting a rule wouldnt help much. But I will take the time to remind our new mods to watch for them. Thanks for your suggestion/feedback

Thanks both of you for your responses, I appreciate it! LostCause especially, I really do like the reporting function for specific chats, and I have a question if either one of you have the answers off of the top of your heads.

When users report a chat, how can an admin of the chat respond to that report? Does it show up in an inbox full of other messages, and if so, is there any way to temporarily mute guests/users that are reported multiple times? Of course, not everyone is super mature, and getting someone muted if a bunch of people target them is a possibility. However, if say 20 or so users report the same chat, whether that person may be a seller, scammer, etc etc, could a system be put in place to mute or time out the user who's chat was reported for say, 5 or 10 minutes until an admin was able to react to the report in an appropriate manner?

Additionally, if the teen chat has an ip autoban system in place for people posting mega links, is this something that every chat room could/would be able to implement?

As @H.R. PufnStuf mentioned, each room has an admin that is responsible for creating rules for their room. The mods enforce the rules, and the admin of each room bans ******** from their room based on the severity of the offense. Because each room has different rules, it doesn't exactly make sense for bans to cary over from one room to the next. In example, if someone is banned in a 13+ room for posting nudity, it would not make sense for them to be banned in an 18+ room where nudity is allowed.

Completely independent of each individual chat room, ******** can be site banned, but this can only be done by Chatmaster and is not handled by any of the room admins. This is used for the worst of the worst offenders that really get under CM's skin. The system is in place to ban predators across the site, but I cannot speak to how often this takes place because it is far above my pay grade.

The report system on the mod side is an additional feature to anything you can see on the chatter side. The reports do not show up in our inbox with all of our PMs. When a mod logs in, we get a list of every single thing in the chat that currently has a report attached to it. From there, we have the choice of kicking the offending chatter, muting the offending chatter, deleting the offending message, or doing nothing and clearing the report without action.

I'm unsure of if a system could be added to give a temporary timeout for ******** who receive multiple reports, but I do doubt that a system like this would be implemented even if it could. And the reason for that is because not everyone has each other's best interest in mind. This could unfortunately be easily abused and manipulated to target and harass specific ********.

Additionally, if the teen chat has an ip autoban system in place for people posting mega links, is this something that every chat room could/would be able to implement?
Yes and yes. Every room has an autoban feature that is utilized. Specific words and phrases are added to the filter and the system automatically bans ******** when the specific word or phrase is said in main chat or PMs.

Awesome, well thanks both of you! I really appreciate the input (and honestly was significantly faster getting back to me then I thought, which I appreciate) For now I don't have any other input since my questions were answered, but I hope some others can jump in here and post any thoughts or suggestions they have on the matter!

Absolutely. We really appreciate you caring and taking the time to write out your feedback and suggestions. Because the site is volunteer based, you run into a mix of potentially slow response times (because some of us pretend to have lives), but also staff members who really care about the site and the safety of the ******** (because they wouldn't be volunteering their time to help if they didn't). Feedback like yours really helps and is much appreciated. We're constantly fighting the good fight of adding more and more phrases to the ban filters, but unfortunately we can only be reactive rather than proactive. We have open conversations between the staff of all the rooms to try and keep on top of the latest terminology used by predators so we can be informed to quickly spot them, remove them, and report them to authorities. Thanks again and take care 🙂.

Some people do it like "M3ga" So maybe thats something that can get censored aswell but ive been on many different chats and anything with the word mega is instantly kicked/banned if mods are online...

We do that and people always find loop holes at the same time we do kick/ban anyone asking for it ASAP
