Question

So as far as I can tell... Any information about the person could be doxxing, including their favourite colour, their age, etc.

You’ve been on the site for almost 20 years and probably on the internet longer than that. You seem like a reasonably intelligent person. Are you saying you don’t know the basic definition of doxxing or the basic intent of the no doxxing rule? Hmmm 🤨

I dunno. I've seen people go crazy about posting someone's ip address. Seems as antiquated of a fear and rule as the no posting links rule... That existed because it was before social media.

It seems odd that it has to be a specific situation. Why wouldn't it just be specific pieces of information? Can the site, admins, or anyone specify what it deems private enough to be considered doxx worthy for banning?

It’s just a personal preference of mine. I’d rather discuss specific instances because oftentimes each instance has its own details that affect the decisions made about that situation.

As I said, you can peruse each rooms rules about doxxing to get a better idea of what that entails.

Seems pretty arbitrary and inconsistent, ripe for abuse by mods and admins. It also seems like a lack of understanding about data and its significance in relation to personal security.

As I think you’re well aware, since you’ve been here for decades, the topic of doxxing can be complicated and not always black and white. The owners developed rules around doxxing, but obviously they don’t cover every variation of every doxxing scenario. And like any rule, it’s good to regularly revisit them and see if they are still relevant and make sense in the current climate.

It’s also why it’s important for moderator and admin teams to have clear communication with each other when doxxing issues come up. So we can discuss as a team the specific details of a situation and apply the rules to that situation.
