Anxiety Coping Mechanisms

There's been a fair few posts about anxiety and it seems we have a lot of members who have or are suffering with it... So I thought I'd make a post where we can all suggest or discuss our (healthiest!) coping mechanisms that we have been taught or self-learned to use to help ease it, with the hope it might help someone else going through it... I'll start.

I use the 5-4-3-2-1 method, sometimes: Acknowledge FIVE things you see around you... Acknowledge FOUR things you can touch around you... Acknowledge THREE things you hear... Acknowledge TWO things you can smell... Acknowledge ONE thing you can taste.

You can play around with the things you're counting... Some do x amount of yellow things, but it does pull my focus from an anxiety attack when they come on a lot of the time.

I also journal to focus my thoughts when they feel like they're starting to overwhelm me.

Take so much drugs nothing matters to you. even though im not anxious or have any kind of anixety im sure if people took the same amount of drugs I take they would also not worry about anything at all.

Also just remember you're only here once and who cares what people think or what they will do or not do.

Like my dad said years ago being anxious is not worth it when nobody really gives a **** about what you are thinking or doing. people worry too much about everybody but themselves but don't realise nobody really cares. so stop worrying about everything so much and enjoy yourself and your life lol

Just have your favourite song (or a whole playlist) blasting down your ears while your out. You'll be too focused on jamming to care about people around you.

...not good if your in an area with alot of mugging tho-
i do this all the time, works like a charm

Hey, I love this idea of sharing coping mechanisms for anxiety. The 5-4-3-2-1 method you mentioned is really interesting - I can see how it would help ground you in the present moment. Journaling is also a great way to process your thoughts and emotions. One other technique that might be helpful is deep breathing exercises - have you tried those? What about others, what works for you?

I tend to bring an item that comforts me mostly soft objects. If i start to feel overwhelmed i will hug it typically. Sometimes textures or smells help. Perhaps bring a weighted stuffed animal that's easy to carry around. I hope this helps if not no worries everyone has a different method ofc.

Might not be for everyone but after my morning tea I take 20 minutes and follow this before I get my day started.

No alcohol or weed helps also. Just saying...

Get physical! Run. Walk. Work weights. Core exercises. These have helped me tremendously. Healthy body and all.

There are also plenty of online group meeting for those suffering from anxiety. No need to reveal one's identity either.

NB: I am NOT a mental health professional; I am simply sharing what works for me.

Thanks for sharing your experience and ways to cope with anxiety. The 5-4-3-2-1 method is a great technique to focus on your surroundings and calm down. Journaling is also a helpful way to organize your thoughts and feelings. What are some other healthy coping mechanisms that have worked for you?

I agree with all the peeps who suggested music, its my number 1 go to when I don't feel right and it always works for me but everyone is different, I also pray, if you are so inclined this may help too. Ppl say meditation but I've never really seriously tried it. Exercise is also a great way to clear your head.
