Bottled water contains hundreds of thousands of plastic bits: study

Using a recently invented technique, scientists counted on average 240,000 detectable fragments of plastic per liter of water in popular brands -- between 10-100 times higher than prior estimates -- raising potential health concerns that require further study.

If people are concerned about nanoplastics in bottled water, it's reasonable to consider alternatives like tap water," Beizhan Yan, an associate research professor of geochemistry at Columbia University and a co-author of the paper told AFP.

But he added: "We do not advise against drinking bottled water when necessary, as the risk of dehydration can outweigh the potential impacts of nanoplastics exposure."

There has been rising global attention in recent years on microplastics, which break off from bigger sources of plastic and are now found everywhere from the polar ice caps to mountain peaks, rippling through ecosystems and finding their way into drinking water and food.

While microplastics are anything under 5 millimeters, nanoplastics are defined as particles below 1 micrometer, or a billionth of a meter -- so small they can pass through the digestive system and lungs, entering the bloodstream directly and from there to organs, including the brain and heart. They can also cross the placenta into the bodies of unborn babies.

The results showed between 110,000 to 370,000 particles per liter, 90 percent of which were nanoplastics while the rest were microplastics

I read up on it a few years ago that they also promote estrogen in men. You just can't get away from harmful products due to the lax laws in America and the abuse of capitalism with consumers being the victims.

It wasn't even until recently that they started making plastic containers bpa free but that doesn't cover take out food, water bottles, TV dinners, etc.

I agree with Princessa. Get glass and refill

Are any of you dead? No? Then just use your plastic water bottles and swallow those big, nasty microplastics. You'll be ok. Your ancestors ate dirt and your parents walked 96 miles over mountains and through oceans just to get to school<3
All jokes aside, things were made with more simple ingredients too. Capitalism caused worse products out that needed to be massively produced and given long shelf lives. While the life expectancy is higher, so are the unhealthy products.

I do agree with you to a certain extent. When it comes to saving the planet and all that. Which is why I'm happy they replaced plastic straws wrapped in paper with paper straws wrapped in plastic. Progress! But when it comes to things like microplastics, our bodies are literally one giant filtration system that attacks any foreign bodies detected. So we'll all be fine. Unless you're a weak bitch with no immune system. Then you're going to be taken out by bottled water

Well, here is where I'll share my old age with you young whippersnappers, back in the day we had glass Coke bottles and paper shopping bags and pretty much all food products were sold in paper or glass or tin cans. We even had Big Macs wrapped in paper ! lol. This all started when a bunch of environment nut jobs started screaming we were killing all the trees and they would never come back. (BTW trees and glass and tin are 100% renewable) So hence they opened the door to the plastic industry to take over most of the American packaging industry. I won't get into politics but you can guess which party backed the "plastic revolution". Maybe just go back to paper and glass and tin and problem solved. I personally would not mind if my shopping bill was a little higher for paper and glass and tin packaging. I have always firmly believed the huge cancer rates now are 100% connected to all the plastic in our food chain. Just my 2 cents.
