Finders Keepers

Youre walking down the street. You find a diamond ring on the floor, a gold chain, a wad of cash, whatever it is you seem to pick up because you are curious and have deemed the item worthy enough to consider picking it up.

Is the item now yours?

Some may argue there is ethical responsibility and moral responsibility to attempt to locate the owner and return the item

But how do you find the rightful owner when you have no idea, how long this item has been there or whom it belongs to?

Do you hand it over the police so now they can take possession of it and auction it off? Because there is no way any police force actually enlists detectives into finding the owners of lost property.

Do you leave it on the floor so someone else picks it up and you?

Note: some places do have actual lost and found kiosks. In these places it is more likely for the owner of the lost product to try and find it.
But other places like the bottom of a river or a sidewalk do not.

Gee I post a debate since no one's touched the debate forum in a month and inkntat bumps a 3 year old thread just so my debate won't be visible .

Well I'ma bump it back up

You pick it up, take it to the nearest police station, give your details and see where it goes there.

Don't just klep it and say "finders keepers", it is technically theft.

So true. As for me it isn't the case of not getting caught, it's the guilt of taking it.
Kinda same. Depends on what it is. It's its a cool looking toy, I'll take it... but then be sad that some kid probably dropped it.

Something with real value? Noooo, I haven't seen it, oh I'm so sorry, please, let me help you look 😈

I dont see the guilt on taking something deemed lost and forgotten. You are repurposing it rather than letting mother nature erode it.

Now if you take something you knowingly know someone is looking for that is different.

Its like a stray dog.
Would u rather let it wither and die "hoping" the owner comes back for it.
Or would you rather rescue and keep it.

Why do i bear the responsibility in making sure the dog finds its owner when i could just as easily ignore the dog and let it die to rid myself of that responsbility.
