Homophobia - Examples, Discussion, Comments

A good indication for working out whether something is homophobic or is prejudice based on another characteristic is to substitute the references to sexuality with a reference to race. I'll do that now to show what was so wrong with the thread that prompted me to create this thread

Original post from this thread
Ive created this thread, because Ive seen many people here (and in rl) claim something is "homophobic" so the question I raise is : what is it, what are the limits? Is the term just a way to shut down other people's opinion's that others may find offensive? Or is homophobia such an issue that strong vigilence is needed ?

Change it to be about race and it's pretty clear what was wrong with the quote above and what was wrong with the thread I've linked to above.

Telling someone to say "in my opinion" before their comments which have been highlighted as homophobic and racist can be seen as enabling homophobia.

Is is the equivalent of telling the KKK that they can say what they like, as long as they preface it with "In my opinion".

Here is a specific example:

Why am I not surprised by this behaviour of both of them, you often see @H.R. PufnStuf laughing at very inappropriate comments about all sorts of comments on here that are clearly disgusting.

In this world there is no room for homophobia, transphobia, racism etc, live and let live, mind your own business, what someone chooses to do with their life or orientation is their own business.

but as well know nothing will ever be done by this gaslighting, trolling, sarcastic bear poking tool, and of course its everyone elses fault but his and I have no words for Hannah (vile UK) as one claims she needs understand not being used as a pawn in ones game. Shame.

You know, I just worked out this is a 13+ forum. I dunno why, but I assumed since both the Gay and Lesbian chats are predominantly 18+ that this forum must be too.

For those of you that don’t know, I’m bi or pansexual, whatever you prefer. I say they heart wants what the heart wants, regardless of gender identity.

Now, in regards to the topic of this thread, I said previously in the other thread that accidentally on purpose got closed - anything that’s dehumanising, slurs, claims of mental defect, and even the veiled hostility we saw recently.

Anything that has negative or pejorative connotations toward the LGBT peoples is anti-LGBT rhetoric.

Before a troll picks up on this, can I ask you to clarify if you mean literally anything negative that’s said to an L, G, B, or T person even if it’s not said because of their sexuality/gender?

Eg. Someone could say to me “you’re a brainless idiot” that to me wouldn’t be anti-LGBT but if someone said “Being gay makes you a brainless idiot” then that is homophobic because my sexuality has nothing to do with my brainlessness or my idiocy.

FIXED

example of specific user and homophobia:

For reasons, I shall not provide proof, but it was brought to light that a certain user had gone to court IN REAL LIFE, over a few items. I'm not sure what the actual charges are as it differs from my country so I will use terms im familiar with. 1. drunk in public 2. disturbing the peace 3. hate speech. a news article/police blotter was relayed to the forum, in it stated the forum user had been arrested for yelling homophobic slurs in their neighborhood, at their neighbors who they knew were gay. the result was the forum user was allowed to bail/bond out and await the judges orders at home. when recalled back to court, the judge and the forum user chatted and it was advised that the forum user keep their space from the neighbors as well as continue/start taking medications on a regular basis.

Historically partially in the instance of Ped0 behavior, as a safety issue/precaution/rule if a site user (either chat or forums) is found out to be one, they are banned. It would then stand to reason that if a forum user had real life history of homophobia (with r/l proof) and had a wanting to also be that way in forums . then action should be taken. when the um staff reject taking action, even with proof either from historic/posts actions on forums or real life, then it is clear that um staff is accepting of users ( either the same or others) being homophobic.

(in my opinion)

+s/s for post in additional threads as needed.

Forgiveness, please. I’m heavily medicated at the moment.

Take out the word ‘negative’, because even if I change the conjunction to ‘and’ rather than ‘or’, it can still be misconstrued by pedantic arseholes (and I don’t mean you, just to clarify).

Probably because Clemson needs freedom of speak as per acknowledgment below:

Biased, no?
Indeed. That particular one in the screenshot uses misogynistic language frequently as well as mocking the mentally ill by calling people the ‘R’ word seemingly with impunity

DISCLAIMER:

1. Luka’s post is on topic as it’s referring to the deletion of a post in which another user gave an example of someone who’s used homophobic language

2. This is my thread
