Is spending time in chat a waste of time?

So once again someone in chat commented about the time some are spending in chat. More often than not this is an exercise in trolling, usually failed trolling.

It brings up the question...is chatting a waste of someones time? My short answer is more often than not no.

I am also sure than many of you are doing other things whilst chatting. For me personally I am nearly always doing other things online that I would be doing if chatting or not, so why not hang out with the girls and socialise at the same time.

What are some of the things I do whilst chatting? I have many interests that I peruse online. I attend online lectures, I will watch debates and podcasts on various topics I am interested in these include various science topics, ancient history, politics and political thought. I am very interested in metabolic health so am often either doing research or checking out podcasts on this subject.

I get all my news online as it is clear now legacy media is full of crap.

Of course I am listening to tunes and often sharing them in chat, this includes seeking out new songs to listen to, new experiences musically.

Finally as some of you know I am a writer. I am often writing when in chat. I also often get inspiration from chat, some of my award winning poems came from chat and the children's book series I have started as a project the main character is based very loosely on a girl in chat. Sometimes for practice I will write a poem or limerick using someones mood as the first line.

I can't do something that requires a lot of focus while on chat, but I can do email and watch a show sometimes. Or I love the music choices others post and just sort of clean up while checking messages every few minutes.

for me its school work or studding while chatting
Don’t be studding too hard, stud.

As to the OP’s question, this is basically my social life. I know that sounds nerdy, geeky and extremely sad, but it’s the truth.

As someone with severe issues with face-to-face social interactions, this is one place where the ‘face’ is words. As someone who adores reading, words are my sincerest friends, so it makes interacting with people much more palatable to my autistic brain.

No, and I was made to think the entire site is a waste of time. As long as it's not controlling your life and taking away from needed healthy activities, you're good.

Im usually on at night and it's been helping me sleep getting back in contact with some of the genuine people.

Its neither sad nor geeky its my social life too, there is a delusion that real life is different from online...its not there's just more sensory input in real life.
