Let me tell you a curious fact about the Middle Ages. Long before stand-up comedy emerged and jokes were used by comedians as a weapon of confrontation and social criticism, there were already court jesters. They were able to use humor and sarcasm to criticize the authority of kings and the corruption of the nobles. Since many kings were ignorant, they often failed to grasp the hidden messages, which spared the jesters from harsher punishments, such as having their tongues cut out. On the other hand, prostitutes in the Middle Ages weren't so lucky. As they were not seen as "holy" nor morally respected, whenever they dared to joke about the nobles, they often ended up with their heads served on a platter.

So, let me tell you something about myself: I love revisiting the past — the old things — because they give us many clues about the future. It’s impossible to predict the future; we simply don’t have that ability — only God does.
However, we do have something that often works as a compass for what lies ahead: historical facts, the ancient, the past, time itself.
Let me give you an example: wars.
Obviously, future wars will involve different enemies and different tactics. With the advancement of technology, it no longer makes sense for soldiers to spend years fighting in trenches when we now have drones and nuclear bombs.
But some things tend to repeat themselves. For instance, before Hitler attempted to invade Russia in the middle of winter, Napoleon had made the same mistake. And guess what? Both were defeated by the Russian winter.
Another example: before World War I and World War II, the region of Alsace-Lorraine was a major source of conflict between Germany and France. Today, we no longer have Alsace-Lorraine as a hotspot, but we do have Taiwan and Crimea.
Thus, even though it’s impossible to say for certain that a Third World War is on the horizon, the past — the ancient — gives us many clues.
That’s why I love the past, Kim.
Because it has this amazing ability to show us what might be ahead, even when we can’t quite see it yet.
