Blind pets?

My horse, Sofi, who is 18 years old has injury-induced cataracts that cover her entire right eye, causing roughly 80% blindness.

Is there anyone else who has any blind/partially blind pets?

My dog Jake (Australian Red Heeler) is almost 12 years old.

From what I have read the life span of these beautiful and intelligent dogs is 13-14 years.

He's starting to develop hip/joint issues, and (sadly) has cataracts in both of his eyes. '

He also has some hearing problems, and his teeth are beginning to deteriorate.

I hate to admit it, but Jake is getting old, but he is still so loving and loyal and tries his best to keep up.

I would hate it when Duke gets old... HE is so playful right now... I would love him more than ever tho... He is like my solace... He takes my pain away...

I am more attached to him than I could ever be to any human I guess...

My friends jackrussel age 14 is almost blind and she cant hear anything. But still she is always happy and active little old lady 😄

My betta fish Triangle is going blind I think. I've had him for 3 years already, but the usual life spans are like 1-2 years :reallysad:
I love this fish, I taught him so much. He knows how to follow me, jump out of the tank for food, flip around..Now he just tries to eat and sits in his house. I think he's gonna kick the bucket in a few weeks or so, and if he does I'll be sad, but I think I'm going to get a shark to replace him lol

I volunteer at an animal sanctuary.
I've known about a dozen blind animals there in 10 years, most being canine and fairly old.

One they tell me is blind, but the fact that I carried him to a new location and set him where he'd never been, and he ran around every obstacle, tells me they aren't totally correct.

As for betas. Mine of 3 years I had to kill. He lost the ability to float or swim, which means he'd drown (they're practically air-breathers.) After watching him struggle greatly..... I did a mercy killing and buried him in the garden beneath my window.

It's nice to look through the posts in this thread and see people knowing about their pets-- lifespans, what is going wrong, etc. 20 years ago, many people would not.

I had a horse, who when he turned 23, immediately lost eyesight.
I currently have a 3 year old, entirely blind BEW [blue-eyed white] Mini Rex rabbit. If you're not familiar with the BEW gene, often times it causes hereditary blindness from birth due to some conflicting genetics, blah blah blah. Anyway, she's great, but I had to remove her eyes completely a year ago because they began to bother her to the point that she was scratching at them with her claws. She shredded her left cornea. She's in a temporary home right now until I complete my moving process.

My 17 year old dog went blind. I refused to allow anyone to move anything in the house so my "old man", could go around the house as he always did.
In the past I new a lady her mare lost her eye in a accident. There was nothing in the socket and that horse got along fine with one eye. Animals adapt .

I have a 10 year old Blue Heeler (aka Australian Cattle Dog) who is going blind due to retinal degeneration. (He has been with me since he was 7 weeks old) . He goes almost everywhere with me, including to work, and travels with me too. The real question is, which one of us is having a harder time adjusting to it - him or me? I'm willing to bet it's me. I am doing small things so he can identify where he is (like rugs in doorway openings, and putting mulch around trees so he knows he is near one). If anyone has some useful suggestions for helping both of us adapt, I am all ears. And I dare anyone to comment me putting bells on my shoelaces so he can hear where i am - lol
