Cat questions

Good day!
I'm considering to buy a cat but I'm a little concerned about how much work having one actually implies. Given I'm sorta busy with school most of the time and how lazy I am, I would like a pet that requires the minimum effort. So besides feeding them and the whole little box business, what else do you have to do? how hard is it to get them to use the litter box? how smelly/dirty does your appartment get? do you have to let them outside or can they pretty much stay at home all the time? Don't get me wrong, the cat will be loved 😀

If a cat owner could answer me these questions and give me some pointers, I'd be very thankful.

anyways, i've owned like 6 million cats and have 2 rn. One we got when he was a kitten and he basically figured out how to use the litterbox on his own. Pretty sure if you adopt an older cat they'll already know how to use the litter box. Both of my cats are indoor cats. They aren't allowed out. It's your decision really if you want them to be indoor/outdoor cats. My cats before were outdoor cats and they would come scratching at the door if they wanted to come in or when it was bed time. but I had bad luck with outdoor cats and they were always attacked by coyotes and other cats. I just decided no more outdoor. BUT IT'S REALLY UP TO YOU.

First of all... don't BUY a cat unless you want a pure breed and they tend to be expensive. Cats are a dime a dozen Whatever kind you get - get a KITTY. Getting a grown cat is a lot like getting a divorced woman.

The most important thing is the litter train the kitty - which is very easy to do. The first thing you do is when you get them - put them in a clean litter box. Every hour or so - put they in the litter box. A couple days (or less) they'll know what it's all about. Keep the litter box clean for two reasons. Your apartment won't smell and your kitty won't do it's business in a dirty litter box and will find someplace else to do it.

Keeping a kitty/cat indoors depends on where you live. If you live in the city or near a busy road you may want to keep them indoors. If you live in the country you may want to let them out. Whatever you do - do not let them outside till you have had them indoors for a couple of weeks - they could get lost.

You will be able to play with a kitten but you'll never be able to play with a grown cat UNLESS THEY DECIDE TO PLAY WITH YOU. A cat isn't a dog - and tend to have a mind of their own and won't do ANYTHING unless it suits them. Cats are hard, if not impossible, to train.

Thank you so much for your replies guys. Yeah my idea was always to buy a kitty and not a grown cat and a pure breed, I can understand the whole divorced woman simile lol. Anyway it would be perfect for me to have a strictly indoor cat, since I live in a big city right next to a highway, and also because it's freezing outside 70% of the year. Thanks for explaining the litter training Soldier, I think I can manage. My concern was that the cat would be unhappy if he was always indoors, but it seems not. Anyway, you guys pretty much got me sold and I'm definetely gonna start shoping now.

i'd like to think that i am a prize 😱

anyone would be thrilled to have me.

i was worried my one cat would be lonely, so we got another cat, so when we are at school and work, they have each other. im sure they couldnt care any less. they sleep like 18 hrs a day.

also cats dont care if its cold. they wear a coat 365 days a year. 🙂 but yeah, a busy city street is no place for a cat. they are stuck ups and they would expect a busy street to stop traffic so they could saunter across and then, well, you have smashed kitty 🙁

lol, theres absolutely nothing wrong about divorced woman... anyway, back to cats. How about the smell... Is the litter box the only source of odors?

If you use a good quality litter and change it frequently you shouldn't have any smells.

i am old and fat and wrinkly dear 😀

you can get lids for litter boxes so the cat basically is poopin in a cave lol. it will contain the odor. no other odors unless your cat gets the farts.
 
cats like to be clean, i use a wood pellet litter it works well
i have a litter tray with a lid but tbh my buffy will cross her legs til i get home she prefers going outside , but not at the moment its snowy :lol:

i would guess your friend was a bad housekeeper. i had a friend, like 9 years ago that didnt do laundry, just let it heap up in piles ON THE FLOOR. she had a kitten that pooped everywhere and it smelled the house up, my friend would wear clothes that stunk like cat dump.

my cats have never peed anywhere in my house, but i had tile laid in most of the house so that with pets and kids, nothing gets ruined. i haaate the tile, but just knowing how many stains my carpet would have from spills and junk already, im glad i have it. we have carpet in the bedrooms and one cat did get in the habit of pooping under my daughters bed so i went to the pet store and bought smthg called Boundaries to keep the cat from going there.

my kids werent helping me keep up the little box so now the cats are indoor outdoor. im not digging turds out of a box of rocks. 😱

and also, one of my cats, teh one pooping in my daughters room, started having a phobia of going in the litter box with a lid, so i had to take it off, but then she is obviously mental cuz she would poop beside the box. there was a spill of litter to the side of the box and that cat chose to poop on that small patch of litter rather than in the practically brand new clean litter in the box.

I have 2 cats and they are the easiest to take care of especially if you are busy. They are very independent animals, just make sure they have food. The litter box, if you want them to use it get their paw and rub it in the litter it makes them want to use it. As for letting them outside, they are going to want to eventually if you don't get it fixed. They need to be or they will go into heat which is VERY annoying. Your apartment shouldn't smell bad if you get the anti-odor litter, make sure you clean it on a regular basis or they will use it somewhere else. Also might wanna get a scratch post or it will resort to your furniture.​
 
Only male cats spray, and if you have them neutered, which would be the more responsible thing to do, not even the males will spray.
 
I hear/read this "more responsible thing to do" all the time and think...

Yeah... Responsible for their extinction. Lol.
 
oh yes their stupid scratching!!!!!!!!!! i forgot about the office chair that Max loves to get on the top of and shred. he has really ruined it. damn cat!!! had i squirted him in the face with water every time he did that im sure id have corrected that behavior, but i just let him do it...

1. You have to dig through sand every single day to find crap and then put it in a bag.

2. They are not friendly in the least. One little wrong move and then dig their fangs deep in your skin.

3. They are needy and will wake you up at 3:00 AM in the morning because they're hungry and have to bitch about it.

4. They do not give a **** about you and do nothing at all except act as decoration around the house.

5. They are basically useless. If you break your neck, do not expect a response from your cat. Ever wonder why it's always dogs saving their owner in the news?

There you go. Go buy a dog instead.

They are no dependent at all. Do you even know the definition of "dependent"? You have to feed them, give them food, and clean their **** from a box of sand. The only reason they are easy to take care of is because they are boring and do **** with you. If you want an animal for decoration so it can move around the house whining, get a cat.

I have a cat! he's the best little guy ever! he makes me happy.. even though he gets into a lot of things.. and i cant keep plants cause he eats them.. 🙂

Right now i have 6 cats..they all have litter boxes up on the third floor..which are cleaned daily.. also they do go outside to do thier business.. cats are no more trouble than dogs... or kids..i like the way they tend to thier own business. i can go away for a couple of days and as long as the food holds out..they are fine.. my dogs need way more attention than the cats...! (btw i have 5 dogs right now... a parakeet, a fishtank, a turtle tank and 4 kids..all are clean and happy)

No, cats are truthfully incredibly dirty creatures and spread diseases very easily. They maintain their bodily hygiene very well on their own, but think about it... they use those barbed, coarse tongues to clean themselves. Those very tongues contain oodles upon oodles of hair, bacteria, dirt and germs that have come off of their coats.

.... annnnnd I will let my cat lick me whenever she pleases anyways. Love is gross, whatever

Cats are great pets. They are clean fun. They all come with different personalities.

Some find it in easy to use the cat flap where some need coaching where some need you to let them in and out.
Do they prefer to be in or outdoors . Only a cat can answer that. You will soon find out.

Once you train you cat how to use their litter they generally don't foul your home.

Apart from that if the cat is female they need to be spaded unless you want them to have kittens.

Cats are lovely animals and all they they need is food water and petting.
If you have time then I recommend getting a 🐈
 
man my cat rizla i loved her to bits still havent got used to losing her 15 years ago my ******* of a neighbbour poisened her she is buried in ones garden along side my grandaughters gerbil called kevin

Ahhh he sounds lovely and good for you for taking on an older cat. He sounds like hes quite settled and happy already.
 
the bigger space/home you have, and the more frequently you change the litter box, and feed her on time, and play with her the more pleasurable and manageable of a situation and experience you will have - best of luck! 😱k:
