You are right. Liquid eyeliner is pretty hit or miss. I only use liquid eyeliner on my top lid, or when I'm doing the "cat-eye" wings.
My favorite is Wet n' Wild MegaLiner. They're about $3 per tube and I never have to touch it up throughout the day. It doesn't crack, run, or do that awful thing where it gets above your eye.
Black is my most-used color, but they also have really pretty metallic blue and metallic turquoise.
The only issue with this liner is that it can be difficult to apply for those who don't have a steady hand, or are new to using liquid eyeliner. The brush is very thin and flexible, so it takes patience and practice to get good at it. 🙂 However, a good "beginner" liquid eyeliner that I used to use is Maybelline LineWorks. The brush is less flexible, so it offers better control when applying. But it's also not as cheap (around $6 per tube).
