In a debate between the UK's current Prime Minister and the likely next Prime Minister, an audience member asked, "Are you two really the best we have?"

I guess the same comment could be said about the US too where, unlike the UK, the US directly elects the Head of State/Head of Government. Imo, taking out all of the politics, Biden probably shouldn't be running and neither should Trump. You have two guys vying for one of the most stressful jobs in the world who would probably be in retirement in the ordinary world of work.

I'm interested - is anyone particularly enthusiastic about the offering in the forthcoming elections on either side of the Pond? Are there other realistic and credible candidates you'd have liked to see going against each other? Will you even be voting?

Donald Trump is streaking nude down 5th Avenue towards the UN building while running after his orange wig

Joe Biden is taking on the role of clown in the circus and he'll be back on your screens in November

Rishi Sunak finally got Sky TV, poor mite

Kier Starmer is about to declare that he only became leader so he could fulfil his lifelong wish of getting the lead role in "Yes Minister"

No not at all excited in fact dread is a better word. With religious liberties and basic freedoms under attack in the US , really no choice have to vote Biden. There are three basic candidates, one kindly old man who escaped from the old folks home, one not so kindly old man that pays 130 thousand for 3 minutes of sex while his youngest son was being born, and RFK JR who as said a worm has ate part of his brain. We have no choice. Really none of the above is what I wish I could vote.

After the last debate in the US I can honestly say that it’s incredibly depressing that these 2 are the “best and brightest” that we have to choose from. No real solutions here, just a feeling of dread for the next 4 years.

The "solution" is to just pull someone's social security number and have which ever poor sob get picked to run the country for four years!

In the 2 party system of the United States, every four years they trot out and parade around two turds. Since the two parties are so closely related (except for hot button current issues that they ACT very divided upon) it gives you the ILLUSION of a choice. The reality is : they are both turds. The right and the left wing? Same bird.

It’s really gross. tbh, I really think it’s almost pointless to talk about the differences between the parties. They’re in the same boat.

Labour received 34% of the vote in a first past the post system, yet triumphed in 412 seats (a landslide victory). The Tories retained 121 seats with 24% of the vote, the Lib Dems now have 72 MPs from 14% of the vote and Reform UK have just 5 seats, also with 14% of the vote, one more than the Greens who got just 7% of the vote. Other parties (SNP, Plaid Cymru, Independents, and the parties of Northern Ireland) received 34 seats from the remaining 7%. Voter turnout was less than 50% in some areas, with the average national turnout less than 58%, which means that just about a fifth of those actually ELIGIBLE to vote, voted for the current party of UK Government. I voted Reform UK, although in doing so, I held my nose. Usually I just spoil the ballot paper (because it's still a voice being heard - albeit not being listened to). Proportional Representation, anyone?

Exactly the same in the UK, except that now and then we might roll out a third option to make it all look above board - which it isn't. They all piss in the same trough at the end of the day.

fun fact; america has more than just two parties…

republicans, & democrats just dominate our politics here…

it wasnt always that way, but it is in contemporary times…

the problem with the other parties today, are, they don’t has platforms good enough to gouge voters away from the two; they just arent attractive politically beyond fringe voters 🤷🏼‍♀️

u think it’s inconsistent now, imagine the dysfunction with more 🍵

Again, just like the UK. There are a plethora of parties in the UK but you can guarantee that it's not so much that minor parties aren't attractive to voters (though obviously some aren't - it depends on one's point of view and whether you are left-leaning or right-leaning - or preferably - to the powers that be - centrist). Anything beyond the mainstream isn't going to be given the light of day by the Establishment - in reality the mass media or the business moguls who dominate the status quo. It's not a level playing field. It's never been a level playing field.

It has little to do with whether their platforms are attractive enough to the electorate at large. Small parties don't have the money. Small parties can seldom field enough candidates to merit a party political broadcast on the television. Maybe that's WHY the minor parties are on the fringes and appeal only to fringe voters - the population at large just don't have information about them to make a properly informed choice, and such information is not going to be made available by the mass media any time soon. Social media might be the only option available, and even that can be sketchy at best.
