Lionsfan101, I'm a Rugby nut, as you may or may not know.
So much of a Rugby nut that in 2015 me and the lass I wed in February 2016 went on a Pre-Wedding Honeymoon
😛 to Europe so that I could take in/write on the All Blacks' seven-games-unbeaten run to their third world championship.
(I like to be
different!)
That World Cup was hosted by
England.
The next one (which I will be at, too) is in
Japan in 2019.
The one after that - 2023 - has its venue decided this week.
There are three contenders:
South Africa
France
Ireland
South Africa hosted the 1999 World Cup.
France hosted the 2007 World Cup.
Ireland have never hosted the World Cup (and there have been 8 thus far).
I thought
Ireland (and in Rugby
Ireland has always, even during the troubles, had a unified team) would be a
shoo-in - close to other big Rugby nations, compact, hospitable, sociable...
World Rugby's 'recommendation' to their voters, though, is that the thing should go to
South Africa. France are rated second. Ireland third. Their Evaluation Report had South Africa ahead in three of the five categories, for a total score of 78.97%, with its proposed host cities and venues, relying heavily on those used during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, proving pivotal. France (75.88%) emerged on top in two of categories – including finances – while damningly for Ireland (72.25%), it failed to do so in any.
Go figure.
