Both Sony and Microsoft have pretty much designed the perfect controllers. I can’t imagine them changing the design a ton and trying something different. Controllers are held back a lot for having a small amount of input settings which is why we often don’t get PC games like let’s say classic WOW if they launched it on consoles PC players would rage at controllers limitations even though you can play both wow and classic wow with a controller on PC. Elite controllers have fixed this a bit by adding pads at the back of your controller to both offer you more input settings and make things more comfortable. So I say there are 3 ways both companies can go next gen.
- Quality of life changes to the controller, nothing big just minor things to change the experience and perfect it a bit more.
- Adopt the elite controllers designs. Meaning in the box you get access to the back pads of the elite controllers as well as sensitivity changes and a ton of other cool things that hopefully aren’t that expensive for the company. (I’m personally for this been wanting this but don’t wanna spend 200 dollars on a controller that will last a year)
- Completely change the design of the controller. Many times people forget Microsoft basically made the ps4 controller and any other console type controller with there original Xbox design. Sony followed it into PS3 generation then perfected it ps4 generation. I think Microsoft more or less perfected it Xbox 360 generation as it’s not that different from the one we have now. If Microsoft makes this HUGE risk again.. because honestly the way a controller looks is a huge make or break for a console. I don’t think Microsoft will do this but if they do hopefully it can be a hybrid of sorts of the traditional controller and mouse and keyboard.
