My snake won't move.... :( I see he's still breathing, moving his head, etc... To be honest... I did have him wrapped in my jacket while I was at the park for a little... Is it because his body is cold or??? :confused1

I put him in his cage and he stayed in the exact position... I moved him around a little and he moved his head a bit... then I put him near his water bowl, which he likes to sit in sometimes... He stuck his head up from the water and hasn't moved it since....

Help?

Edit: So I fed him Wednesday, but they gave me a free mice this time around and the mice is still in the cage... he was under the hut that I have for my snake... When I pushed his body under the hut, he started moving around... I know he's not going to do any harm to the mice until he's hungry... but do you think the snake is cold AND stressed by the mice? :hmmm:

What is the temperature/humidity of the snake habitat/cage? When you said 'cold' does the snake feels cold to the touch?

^ LOL

Is this your new snake? May be its just a little freaked out at the move and needs time to adjust?

The humidity level is fine... :( He was cold to touch when we were outside.. like he rarely moved.. I thought he was frozen but he was moving his head a little. Now he's just in his log... I hope he feels better. Maybe I should just remove that mouse from the cage and just give it a different one next week and let him adjust to the cage...

Yes. My first day taking care of him! Finally got up here to get my lovely snake and now he's all weird on me. :crying: :crying: I believe he does need time to get adjusted to his new surroundings... Since I've got em I haven't left him alone lol! I love my baby boii.

What kind of snake is it? And you should never leave the uneaten food in their cage. If they don't eat in a reasonable amount of time, the mouse should come out. They can cause harm to your snake. Same goes for crickets or anything left in reptile cages.

Hope he's feeling better soon, D.

Might be sick. Snakes aren't supposed to be in a cold environment for a long period of time. ;/ It is winter after all.

Yeah.... I think that's where I f'd up... I was at the park and thought the jacket would keep him mildly warm until I went back inside but derp derp I was wrong! He barely moved as I was picking him up from my jacket to bring him back inside lol!

He's a baby ball python... A toddler at that. :D Yeah, the mice was in his cage for approximately 2 days and I was scared my snake was a little stressed due to him not being able to adapt to his new environment yet. I don't think it would've really caused harm to the snake cause it was a baby mice... He was just finding corners to sleep in lol... BUT, I took him out last night and had a crazy ass experience trying to get him away. !! My snake seem to have changed positions it was laying in since last night so I think he's feeling better now... I won't interact with him for a week so he could probably adjust to the new cage and everything?

Thanks so much everyone! I never had a snake of my own and the pet store tells me different things from the internet so I figured I'd see if anyone else knew about snakes. :p

I've read from the internet that one needs to be careful when feeding a live mouse to your snake. All it takes is one bite from the mouse to puncture the snake's spinal cord (that could lead to severe injury or death).

I used to have a ball python too. The reason for not leaving the mice in his cage for too long isn't so much they'll "bother" him, but they'll leave unwanted "deposits" and mice crap is filled with bacteria. If you can, you should try to feed him elsewhere, not in the cage he lives in. If you can get a separate tank, box, anything. He'll learn to recognize that as his "feeding place". Not only does it keep a mess out of his cage, but he'll get used to the fact that he doesn't get fed in his cage..and it'll lessen the chance of him biting you when you try to handle him. Sometimes they don't shed their eye platelets and have trouble seeing. Makes them edgy at feeding time....js. :p

I'm no expert, by far, but if you have any questions, I do have some experience. Good luck with him.

and I definitely wouldn't want that. :( I'm already emotional about him being a little too cold lol! It was so sad when I put him in his cage and he didn't move from that position at all! I nearly flipped a lid! I will be sure to be extra careful when feeding live rodents. Also, I won't leave them in the cage for over a day. That's why I'm going to feed him once a week. The pet shop gave me that other mice... For what? I don't even know.... Not like I'm going to take care of him and the snake... only my precious baby. <333333

Thanks Tyson!

ah okay! Got it! I will also look into trying to feed him in something else... but I was also reading something online where they say you are more prone to being bit when he's in feeding mode and you have to put him back in his cage from whatever you were feeding him in? :hmmm:

and how would I go about making sure their eye platelets are shed properly? He's roughly 3 - 4 months in age.

Generally when you get a new snake you should leave it a week or so to get used to it's new enclosure before handling it, it's just more stress. I also try not to handle mine on the day of feeding either just to be sure, if they get stressed out chances are they won't feed, and that just becomes a waste. I agree with Tyson (I think you said it) with the live food. I always give mine frozen mice and they have never had any issues. I just find it safer for the snake and less cruel for the mouse lol.

The snake could also be a little lifeless because he's getting ready to shed. My bigger one doesn't move for a week or two if he's preparing to shed, the little one is becoming the same way too. You'll find he'll shed quite often while he's young as he's obviously growing quite fast.

If any part of your snake doesn't shed properly then put him into a tepid bathtub to soften the skin then with a damp wash cloth just wrap your hands around him and let him push through, once the skin is soft it'll just peel off, you should do this as soon as you notice the skin isn't coming off naturally because if their vision is impaired for too long they can go blind.

Hope this is helpful.

Yes, thanks! It was! Honestly, this is my first snake ever! Ha.. My aunt had one a long time ago, same breed, I just never had any interactions with the snake unless I was cleaning the cage for her or watching her feed it the live rat (which is so fun and interesting to watch but cruel at the same time :( ). The guy at the pet store told me it doesn't matter how often I take him out or put him in the cage he's not gonna be as stressed as people think. However, he also advised me that he fed the snake live mice since he's still small and he told me to continue the same. :confused1

I'll try the frozen mice and see what happens. Also, he's feeling so much better guys! I put him in the cage after that night and didn't bother him for about 2 days? :hmm: When I came home from work one night, he was out of the cage!!!!!! Hahahaha! I thought I would never find him but I did! He was in my room's window seal. Ha! Wow... They are so sneaky, I love it... I was just worried he had escaped the room. :paranoid:

Well with mine I just defrost the mice, then shove them into a sandwich bag (ziploc would work fine) and pour some hot water over them to bring them to body temperature, mine either don't notice or don't care about the change. They're only simple creatures really, food is food. Snakes are secretive so if his tank is glass he might be feeling a bit vulnerable, just make sure he has plenty of places to hide and he should be fine, although it sounds like he's settled in a lot better now.

My big one escaped once too. Crafty little bugger figured out how to slide the glass door with his nose, I ended up having to buy a lock because he was doing it daily lol, little sod.

Ha! They're so interesting to talk about! You have a BP too or a different breed?

and yeah, I've read about defrosting the frozen mice online so yeah, that's just about right. Oh, and his tank is glass ha. I need to add more things he's able to hide in but I had no luck at the pet shops. They have logs and cave like objects but the holes are too small. Once he gets bigger (preferably a month from now) he won't fit into the hiding spot anymore! What would you suggest?
