This news article is a real life example of the risks involved with sharing images online. It also acts as a warning to those exploiting others by using their images.

I’ve posted this in the adult section due to the nature of the article but all ages should take note. Please be aware that you need to be over 18 to comment

Two brothers who targeted a 17-year-old in a sextortion scam have been sentenced to 17 years and six months in jail in the US.

The Ogoshi brothers, from Lagos, lured Jordan DeMay into sending them explicit images by pretending to be a girl his age - then blackmailed him.

He killed himself less than six hours after they started talking on Instagram.

Jordan's mother, Jenn Buta, held pictures of her son in court and wept as she read a victim impact statement. "I am shattered to my core," she said.

She welcomed the ending of the trial, but said there was no good outcome from the tragic case.

Jordan DeMay was a popular schoolboy from Michigan.

Samuel Ogoshi, 24, and Samson Ogoshi, 21, sent him a friend request on Instagram pretending to be a pretty girl his age and then flirted with him.

Once they received explicit images from the teenager, they blackmailed him for hundreds of dollars, threatening to share the pictures online with his friends if he did not comply.

Jordan sent as much money as he could and warned the scammers that he would kill himself if they spread the images.

The criminals replied: “Good… Do that fast - or I'll make you do it.”

John DeMay told Marquette federal court in Michigan he still has nightmares after finding his son dead in his bedroom. He said his family was forced to move home to escape the memory.

The brothers pleaded guilty in April to conspiring to sexually exploit teenage boys in Michigan and across the US.

Thirty-eight other US victims were also identified as being targeted by the men. 13 of them were minors.

The brothers sat in court in orange jumpsuits with handcuffs.

The judge said the crimes showed a "callous disregard for life", especially given they continued targeting other victims after learning that Jordan has died.

Both brothers apologised to Jordan's family.
"I'm sorry to the family. We made a bad decision to make money and I wish I could change that," Samson Ogoshi said.

In the first case of its kind, US police tracked the criminals to Lagos last summer and successfully extradited them for trial.

Speaking to the BBC in May from Jordan's family home in the city of Marquette, Jordan's mother praised the police for their work tracking the sextortionists down.

But she said she had mixed feelings about the Ogoshis being behind bars.

"It's a relief that someone is being held accountable, but there's no good that's coming out of this situation for my family or for the individuals responsible's family," she said.

"I miss my son more than I can describe to you, but the mother of those men is probably missing her two sons as well now. She too is really just an innocent bystander of sextortion crime," said Jenn Buta.

In April, two men were arrested after a schoolboy from Australia killed himself. Two other men are on trial in after the suicides of a 15-year-old boy in the US and a 14-year-old in Canada.

Authorities are also working with police in Scotland to investigate the case of 16-year-old Murray Dowey, who killed himself in December.

Gotta be careful how I word this, there was a female who took her own life due to her ex boyfriend who was at her local high school he posted her images online and her parents are now living without their 14 year old daughter. Made huge headlines around my country but sadly it still happens, the laws are nothing like the USA here in regards to this issue each state has its own laws where I am it’s , first offence sending intimate pictures is a slap on the wrist, second offence is 24 months community service, 3rd offence is mandatory 5 years imprisonment.

What a very sad world we live in now and how under age are a huge target for this type of crime. You think this site would want to be rid of that type of behaviour when preying on children (under the age of 16).

You only have to go into a chat room on this site and scroll down the list, look at the pictures of so called young teens and the provocative pictures being used, and then you look again at the of age men who has a list full of teenage friends or pictures of older men with young girls on their profile pictures, I and several other members of this site have constantly flagged this and we are constantly told:
1. Not breaking the rules with the pictures.
2. Not breaking rules with numberous teens on an older persons profile.
3. We dont ban on popular opinion.

This is similar to above, who knows who's these supposed teens pics are really are? Does the owner of those pictures know they are being exploited on a chat site? Do 13 year olds really have in their bios I wanted to be f......d by daddy? or I want to RP with beastiality?

What is very clear in this behaviour (not blaming this site) I am sure it happens in numerous other sites is these people know they can get away with it, any time of the day or night you can log into General Chat (example as its the only room I attend) and if no mods are about, the main screen is full of pedos asking for young children, wanting to do horrific things to young children etc etc, so these preditors are well aware nothing will be done.

So why are you still here supporting this "disgusting" site that allows this when you know no rules are being made to deter it

I'd say (if I am allowed to butt in) even 16 is fairly young, especially if you've grown up sheltered then that's even worse - but again hardly this sites fault for all that.

About #1 Chat Avenue and the other claims, well, it's a catch 22 a lot of the times, whose to completely know what's behind a computer screen?

As for the commentary re staff not kicking on a whim or because of popular opinion, well, no one invited me to the party to share my opinion but it seems that the nay sayers won't be happy until, well, #1 Chat Avenue is completely rebranded or shut down entirely.

Maybe all rooms ought to be 16+ these days, considering the nature of the internet of today verses the internet that was when #1 Chat Avenue first began - but it may not do much still considering anyone can essentially lie about anything including their age.

Well this won't all really matter much if the governments of the world began to censor the internet lol - all this will be yesterday's conversation.

The number of people who send sometimes explicit pictures of themselves in SC & also post banners with their Home address on and telephone numbers is unbelievable tbh.

When we see them we kick them they are just doing harm to themselves and open to exploitation, You can tell them until you are blue in the face that they are putting themselves into harm's way.

I have a banner I post which says "think before you send can't undo can't go back". Stories like this bring home the sad truth about what can happen. Thank you for posting it.

This should also apply to people who want to “bait” others.

Completely different context, however outcomes have been known to be similar to the OP outcome.

I have had it with these nonces; if execution was legal for a day, I’d be out 24/7 hunting these vile cretins.

Edit: RIP to the victims- please take note anyone who reads this. Don’t do it. Tell someone. Even a forums member if you feel you cannot talk to a relative. We can also report to the authorities.

Harassing people like telling them to shart and telling them to off themself also has similar outcome and chat ave do it all the time.
