Professions Extinct Due to Technological Advancement

Share a profession that became extinct due to technology, one you know or have heard about. I'll start: I know about the lamplighter. These people were responsible for manually lighting gas or oil lamps that illuminated the streets. In some regions, they were also called "faroleiros" (lighthouse keepers). Besides lighting the lamps, they took care of maintenance, refueling the lamps and replacing the wicks. However, with the arrival of electricity and electric lights in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this profession gradually disappeared. Very nice, no?!
 
Lift (Elevator) Operators

Lift operators were responsible for manually stopping lifts and timing them for each floor. With advancements in technology, lifts became automated, eliminating the need for human intervention.

Do you have a time that picture was taken? It looks before the day of pocket calculators. I think there is always a need for mathematicians always will be work for someone with math skills.

That picture would have been taken in the late 1950s or early 1960s. That was taken in NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Mathematicians will always be needed to innovate and push the boundaries of science forward of course, but the more mundane stuff (as it's viewed now, not back then!) is handled by computers.
