Purebred or mutt?

First some background information, feel free to skip to the bottom if you don't want to read. I watched a documentary a couple days ago about AKC dogs in the UK and it was quite sad. Basically, it was about how much dogs have changed throughout the years and some of the changes are causing physical problems for the dogs.

Here are some examples:

German Shepherds in the 1800s/early 1990s

Pugs

The painting on the left is from 1880 by a man named William H. Hopkins. The other two photos are of pugs today. As you can see their noses have been squished in.

Some problems German Shepherds may have include arthritis. As you can see they've changed a lot. I've always wondered why law enforcement usually have darker german shepherds, but according to the documentary that's how german shepherds ought to look. You can also see that their hind legs are much shorter than they were before, which may be a cause for hip dysplasia and arthritis.

As far as the pugs go, most have trouble breathing and they sound like they're snoring because of their breathing. Their tails have changed as well and are far more curled than they were before, which causes a curvature in the spine also known as scoliosis.

Boxers are also really prone to epilepsy and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are prone to syringomyelia.

tl;dr: basically, of course dogs are going to be genetically prone to certain things just for being in that breed, but the documentary questioned inbreeding and how it's worsening the situation. some of the members of the kennel club don't mind breeding canine relatives, like grandfather and granddaughter. they also disapprove of canines that don't meet the exact requirements of a given breed, like a Rhodesian Ridgeback has the have a ridge on it's back (when in fact that's a genetic defect that may lead to the dog's death).

So my question is, C-A when getting a new dog is being purebred important or do you prefer mutts? What do you think about dog inbreeding? Or the Kennel Club? Is change within canines/species inevitable?

In my opinion I don't mind whether the dogs are purebred or cross-bred. Cross-breeding can be good to try and get rid of genetic problems mentioned above but it also can turn out very disastrous. I myself have 4 purebred dogs. Pure-bred pretty much means that you know exactly what type of dog it is and what problems could occur. With a Cross-breed you don't know what breeds are in it so you may not be aware of a problem.

Also on an un-related note what does tl:dr mean?

When geting a new dog no the dog does not have to be a perbread dog but some dogs that are mix might have genetic problems. How I know because I been thier and back and someontimes a mix dog can be a good thing or it can be a bad thing. I have a dog that is mix with golden retreiver and yellow lab. And he is a sweetheart but yellow labs have a really bad thing on digging lol. And geting into things that are not good for them so all in all just look at the dog and make sure if you are geting a mix dog make sure that it is healthy and so on good luck. 🙂

wolves inbreed, pandas inbreed, birds, fish, cats, and every serious breeder is committed to genetics. that's the entire point of their job. it's not uncommon to inbreed, but it's not uncommon to outcross breed or selectively breed either. same with livestock on farms/ranches, or in zoo's. whoever made this documentary doesn't really seem to know their shit.

purebred or mutt ?

purebred or mutt ?

I have a Purebred Rottweiler,he's already limping because of hip dysplasia...the rest of my dogs are mutts and are in perfect health..I think Mutts are usuallly in better health than a purebred dog...there;s a feral dog that hangs around sometimes...he literally eats garbage or what ever he can scrounge in the swamp...he;ll probably outlive all of my dogs... its a shame that animals have to be genetically engineered to suit a human's fancy...causes nothing but problems...

My dog is ( i guess...) a cross breed. He's half beagle, half blue heeler. my dad says that my dog's parents were purebred b/c of the way my dogs hips are shaped or something. but i love muts, they're so friendly, and looove people. as for your pics chelle, it could just be that type of dogs just got bred with kinds of dogs and the outcome is the kinds of dogs we have today.

I don't know about you, Luke, but I'd rather believe a geneticist than a breeder. I mean, they do study genes and heredity.

Wolves probably inbreed, because they live in packs. Different packs obviously don't all live within a single region, therefore they may be isolated which may cause inbreeding. Pandas are also isolated animals, not to mention endangered, so I can see why they may inbreed or why zoos/animal sanctuaries may inbreed them. Genetic flow could also play a role, as well as genetic drift.

That isn't the case with dogs though, Luke. What breeders are doing is called selective breeding to get desirable traits that are known to that given pedigree. It's all because the dog bible says so. Again, like mentioned with the rhodesian ridgeback dogs..having a ridgeback genotype is actually a genetic disorder, but because it's the breed's name, people want the dog to have that ridgeback. I also don't think it's fair to cull puppies that don't have that ridge.

Aw, I'm sorry about that. I've always worried about that with my Dalmatians, but luckily none have had that problem. I only have one mutt and he has the greatest temperament ever. He gets along with other dogs, he happily goes to complete strangers (which may or may not be a bad thing), and he's the sweetest munchkin.

Don't even get me started on genetically engineered stuff. I could rant about GM foods for ages and transgenic animals. :ashamed:

Edit: Your dog must be so adorable@ Tinkerbell. I just recently fell in love with blue heelers! They're stunning dogs.

what cracks me up...is the people who own labradoodles..peekapoos ****aoodles... and all the "new breeds" of dogs that are lobbying in get them into the AKC ( american kennel club) um.. sorry, your labradoodle, etc are Mutts... i have a husky/shepherd mix...he;s NOT a purebred dog..he;s a mutt...! I guess it;s all a matter of perspective. but my Rottweiler is papered and AKC registered.. the other dogs i got out of box at WalMart where some kid was giving puppies away.. who knows WHAT they are ?:dontknow: or they were the product of a b*tch in heat and some mutt who came down the road... The AKC is there to promote and protect the pure lineage of the Purebred Dog...its just sad to see the Labradoodles ..they look like .. someone shoot me please ! lol

lol the top breeders are geneticists. akc breeder of the year in 09 has a phd, and has bred over 120 championship winning dogs. if you're talking about pedigree dogs exposed, the person who put that together is not a geneticist. that said, no matter what side of the debate a geneticist is on i think you should take boths opinions with a grain of salt. you got lawyers who are scientologists and engineers who believe 9/11 was an inside job. the acronym behind your name doesn't necessarily mean you're perfectly informed.

it's ridge is a genetic mutation, but german shepherds are more prone to spinal problems. personally i think it's stupid to breed a dog just for show, same with grooming people just for modeling. its nice to know what you're getting with a purebred dog, but some of the cutest dogs i've seen have been mutts, i.e. german shepherd/husky mix. either way i think people should be required to have training lessons before getting a dog, purebred or mutt.

pure breed

hey i like this game

Pure bred: mating pair between 2 of the same dog types that goes back x number of generations. It varies by different organizations, countries, personal opinion, etc.

Mix-breed: an offspring that is a result of 2 different kinds of purebred dogs.

Mutt: an offspring that is a result of mating between one know purebred and one mix-breed.

Mongrel: an offspring that is a result of mating between two mix-breed dogs.

P.S - in the organization that I associate with, it takes about 12-14 generations of breeding between two of the same dog type to be consider a pure bred.

Inbreeding (father/daughter, mother/son) is bad and can cause severe deformities. Inline breeding (grandfather/granddaughter, grandmother/grandson) is fine and keeps the pedigree authentic. Especially with Championship dogs.

Cross breeding for the right reasons is fine. Without it there wouldn't be half the dogs we have now. It also helps eliminate bad traits.

What I don't like is cross breeding for fighting dogs. ie: Jack Russell Terriers and Pitbull Terriers. Both are terriers, but the jack is more aggressive. (it makes for an extremely aggressive dog)

Mutts are dogs that have been bred with so many breeds that no one knows what to call them.

I find it rather interesting to read.

I used to be able to recognise dog breeds most of the time from just looking at them, because I had Puppy in my Pocket as a kid, that listed different dog types!

I don't think that pure breed or mutt would bother me much, because I think dogs are awesome whatever they are. It saddens me that the genetic problems that may hinder or kill them may be the very reason that they were kept alive.

I was horrified one day when I seen a dog that was like a rotteweiller but with a tail, and I said so to the owner. She told me that it is a rotteweiller, but others get the tail stump by having it cut off!!! :shock1::shock1::shock1:

It's called docking. Back in the day breeders docked dogs tails because to show them they had to adhere to specific guidelines. I own Australian Shephards that are naturally docked. Meaning they are born without tails. But sometimes they are born with tail. Nowadays people don't dock tails because I think it's illegal just like cropping the ear of Dobermens.

What's it matter?

I'm not a pet nazi?

I'd rather breeders stopped looking at their wallets and behaved responsibly - whatever the breed or perceived financial "value" of the breed

A lot of the breeders have just been doing it for years, they aren't geneticists. The guy we bought our Dalmatian from was just a family guy who happened to have no experience in breeding but happened to have a female and male Dal, lmfao. 😎 I guess that's why Oreo's temperment is all ****ed up. He's a bitch and even with all the training we tried doing. The other day I was just standing outside with my mom and he ran up behind me and BIT MY BACK. Like, just randomly. I wasn't doing anything to him. His teeth not only did two holes on my back but he dragged his teeth down, so they're like long. -__- Freaking out just thinking about him getting older and more aggressive. I'm thinking he'll tame down after he gets fixed though.

I AGREEEE. My little man, Dodger (who's secretly my favorite, I know I shouldn't play favorites!) is all sorts of mixes and his colors resemble german shepherds, but he looks like a baby wolf tbh. ^-^

I agree.

the only purebred i have/had was a Beagle and a Lab. and i watch this thing on Animal Planet about animal horading, this dude had over 300 cats in his house and about a third of then died and he just put them in the basement or cooler. i was disgusted by that guy. Leaivng the animals to suffer. about half of them were sick or nearly starving or dying. I'm glad that guy got arrested :brokenheart:

I've got a purebred puppy... He's cute, but just as nice as my mutt... I think both could be just as cute, depending on what kind of dog/cat you want... Eventually even the human species will be a play ground of mutts... And I don't think anything's wrong with that...

Pure bred or Mut

Pure bred or Mut

Personally I dont really care if its a mix breed..infact i kinda think mixed breeds are way more fun..you get the best of both breeds an sometimes not the worse of its breed.
