It’s hard to believe it’s been 7 years today since Tom Petty died. He had a great way of mixing rock, pop, and country in his music. While at the same time evoking an older sound from the 60’s (from bands like The Byrds) by using jangly, 12 string Rickenbacker guitars in his songs.
Not only was he one of the best-selling artists of all time but later in his career he was also part of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys (with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne) and on top of that he was also a successful solo artist. Just an unbelievably talented singer/songwriter/producer but also seemingly a really decent, nice guy.
I love all his music but if I had to pick my top 5 songs they would be:
Even the Losers
The Waiting
American Girl
Learning to Fly
Mary Jane’s Last Dance
RIP TP 💔
