Commonwealth heads of government are preparing to defy the United Kingdom and agree plans to examine reparatory justice for the transatlantic slave trade at a summit of 56 Commonwealth countries, which begins in the Pacific island nation of Samoa on Friday.

Diplomatic sources say officials were negotiating an agreement to conduct further research and begin a “meaningful conversation” about an issue which could potentially leave the UK owing billions of pounds in reparations.

Should reparations be paid for slavery?

Should reparations be paid for slavery?

riddle me this ~

what is stoppin' people who arent black from suddenly identifying as black, or just simply identifying as having black ancestors???

you know, to reap the rewards of reparations??

how would such schemes be deterred?? how can u deter this from happening in 2024 where anyone can classify themselves as anything, & in order to prevent law suits of discrimination, government institutions are forced to identify u as whatever u identify yourself as too 🤷🏼‍♀️

i know if the u.s starts giving reparations to people, i'm not only going to say that im 3% black, but im also going to demand reparations for being half japanese & for what the u.s government did to my people during the 40's even though not a single japanese relative of mine was in the country at that time...

u know, exactly like the people who didnt has a single relative enslaved back-in-the-day are gon' do too 💀

anyone else see the problem i see here with this???

peace,
god-bless 🕊️🕊️

It has been done here with the aboriginal populations, they three money at them to begin with and created a range of other problems ie: alcoholism, taking them away from their natural environment etc to now having to fix those issues and the simple appology has worked far more for all concerned according to the documentations of the elders of the aboriginal communities.

How far do we keep doing this. Slavery was denounced in 1833. I'm not saying it was ever right, and I'm not saying it wasn't horrific what happened to these countries... But in 2024, most people would agree slavery was never okay.

If we're to pay the £18.8tn they're suggesting, my, my parents, my nieces, nephews, siblings, we all suffer because it would break our country - None of us were alive when slavery was a norm. Is it fair that someone who never partook in it, would never condone it, has to pay?

Yes an apology as a country, that should be done.

Absolutely not! Britain was the first country to officially abolish slavery (bill put to Parliament in 1807 and the Act to formally abolish the slave trade in Britain and her colonies, finally passed in 1833) and lost many thousands of good men fighting with slave traders from many countries before they too (eventually) followed suit and abolished the trade.

It should be known that African tribal leaders at the time were more than willing to offer captured people from other tribes as slaves to the slave merchants and indeed did so on countless occasions.

If reparations and/or apologies were to be made, can we now ask the Italians for compensation for making slaves of various peoples throughout the world during the time of ancient Rome? Will Israel demand compensation from the Egyptians as a result of Jews being empoyed as slaves during the time of the Pharaohs? The Arabs were middlemen in many cases and (it is alleged) engaged in white slavery). How about the Greeks? They kept slaves. Those are just a few examples. But all this happened hundreds, sometimes thousands of years ago. The present day? Yep - there is modern slavery taking place too. If everyone who had been enslaved at any point in history, or their descendants, asked for and received compensation, each of us would be putting our hands in our own pockets and doling out the dosh whilst simultaneously asking for and receiving their own payments in return.

Clearly what happened in the past is not good and thankfully there is relatively little of it going on now (save for the few instances of modern slavery). So - whilst dialogue MAY be of benefit, in general I think we should all let sleeping dogs lie, learn from our mistakes and look forwards, not backwards. Just my two penn' orth.

I might add to the above - UK Prime Minister Keir "Slippery" Starmer (or two-tier Keir - or free gear Keir - take your pick) and totally inept Foreign Secretary David Lammy could well cave in to demands. Not sure Chancellor Rachel Reeves will be able to persuade them otherwise tbh...

Going to apply slippery slope logic here, the "whataboutisms".

Just say that reparations are paid for slavery. What is next?

There was the dastardly trade of convict settlement, where people convicted of minor crimes were transported in chains to the new colonies of Australia. These people were kept in the most horrible conditions and once given a ticket-of-leave were left to survive on their own.

Speaking of settlement, are reparations are to be paid to indigenous communities that also suffered the most through hostility and disease during the colonial era?

Finally, if all reparations are paid to those who suffered under King and Empire, the last people to get reparations should be the Irish and those of Irish descent. These suffered the worst laws, the harshest treatments and bloody ignorance during their darkest times in the potato famine.

So, as an Aussie who has convict heritage and has both Irish and Indigenous Australian heritage, I will awaiting me cheque in the mail.

Or just apologise for all the horrible laws, acts and deeds so we can move on.
