St John’s Dog of Newfoundland.

Canadians (especially Newfies) on here might be able to help me. Does anyone have any info on the St John’s Dog? It is supposedly ancestral to the Labrador Retriever and Newfoundland. It became extinct in the 1970s/1980s. Are there still dogs on the island with St John’s’ ancestry? Apparently there are still dogs on the island with black and white tuxedo markings characteristic of the St John’s Dog, which sometimes appear in black Labradors and of course is characteristic of the Landseer type Newfoundland.

What is the origin of the St John’s dog? Are they a mixture of mastiff/mountain dogs brought over by Portuguese and Basque fishermen (Cão de Castro Laboreiro, Pyrenean Mastiff and Pyrenean Mountain Dog) and British setters and pointers? Thanks in advance!
