Did you know that the whole jack o' lantern, trick or treat, and dressing up for Halloween thing originated in Scotland?
 
Yes. It goes back to pagan traditions where children would dress up as malicious spirits and characters from folk tales, go round the houses and perform tricks or sing in return for gifts or food. The act of guising (look that word up and you'll find the complete history) as the spirits and characters was intended to blend in with any spirits wandering on Halloween and protect the children from them. The jack o' lantern was originally a hollowed our and carved turnip with a candle inside carried by the children as a lantern. It was common practice Ireland as well I think.

Do you decorate your house for Halloween?
 
Turnips are hard to carve. Very sharp knife and keep your fingers out of its potential path.

We usually have a pumpkin with lighting inside and a bag of treats for the bairns 🙂

Do you have treats ready?
 
No. In the interests of environmental friendliness, reducing my carbon footprint, and ensuring that waste is kept minimal the treats this year will consist of pumpkin seeds

Do you like to minimise waste?
 
Yes I don't mind what day it is

Are you looking forward to Christmas?
 
Yes it's a happy fun time of year (if you avoid the commercial greedfest)

Do you celebrate New Year?
 
Yes. Then do a morning shift the next day hungover.

Do you get annoyed when Easter products are on the shelves in supermarkets on the 26th December?
 
I just ignore them. It's just a continuation of the commercial greedfest and I don't take part in that.

Do you celebrate easter?
 
Nope. I may take a tandem jump to see if I like it one day but I already have two hobbies that are quite expensive.

Have you ever been caving?
 
Yes I got my open water qualification this summer. That's one of my expensive hobbies lol

Have you ever been rock climbing?
 
No. I'm a climber, a manicure would last no time at all lol I don't even use makeup I cut my nails short and the same with my toenails.

Do you?
 
No. Sports are lame and overrated.

Do you have daylight savings in your area, and if yes, do you want it gone for good?
 
Yes and yes. We switched back from British Summer Time to GMT over the weekend. It's a waste of time and effort.

Do you have it and want it gone?
 
Yes I have it but no I don’t want it gone. I like to forget to change the clocks twice a year

Did you have an extra hour sleep on Sunday?
 
No I was up early as usual. Shorter days now for climbing excursions means we need to be at the climb as it's getting light to get the most out of the day. We ended up walking off after our final climb at dusk yesterday and didn't get back to my house until 8. Showers then foooood and hot drinks lol

Did you sleep in?
 
Nope.

Yes. I have to get up much earlier just to be at the base of a climb when it's getting light. Headtorch time of year.

No, but I can bury an ice axe pick in them enough to hold my weight and likewise crampon front points.

Can you build an igloo?
 
Yes for the length of time they're intended to be lived in. I've slept in a snow hole before.

If you can, then I hope I could, so I'm gonna say yes to avoid looking like a wimp

Do you think the old orange man will be elected as President of the US?
 
I'm really hoping he loses. If he gets in they can kiss democracy (such as it is over there) goodbye. Go Kamala!

No. At the moment I still have faith that the majority of Americans don't want to be the laughing stock of the rest of the world but...the electoral college 🙁 so who knows

Do you think there should be an upper age limit on those running for President/Prime Minister/etc?
 
Yes. Definitely. I'd set it at the standard retirement age.

Would you like to see younger people pushing the older ones out of politics?
 
No, but I think there needs to be a greater mix that is representative of the electorate. With age comes experience which has a lot of value but with youth comes the future which is equally valuable.

Do you believe in positive discrimination in politics (eg. female-only candidates)?
 
No, I think the same you. It should be based on merit. I’m not sure there’s ever a good case for positive discrimination.

Would you vote to abolish the British monarchy?
 
Yes. If they want to run as a business then that's fine but they should be self financed and have no executive power at all.

No, I'm a sucker for that one tradition and I think we profit more from them than we pay for them

Would you prefer a presidential system?
 
I'd prefer independence tbh. I don't see the advantage of a presidential system though, the current system would work just fine with someone independent to sign off on acts and the like.

Would you slim the monarchy and hangers on down?
 
Yes sometimes. He's a little bit of a tool though

Do you think Megan Markle was a good match for him?
 
Who am I to say? She does annoy the tabloid scumbags though so she can't be all bad.

Do you like William?
 
Yes. If only things had been different I could have one day been Prince Consort (or maybe Queen, who knows) of the United Kingdom, the realms and the territories but that leggy brunette got in their first with her cute smile. Doubtless at least partly because she had an unfair advantage of being able to produce an heir

Have you been to Buckingham Palace?
 
We walked past it once. They could build some decent housing on a plot that size 😛

Have you been to Balmoral (not Balamory)?
 
I think it was before I was born lol. I've seen excerpts from it and it's ok for a kids programme. Tobermory and Mull are beautiful though 🙂
