This thread and other conversations concerning civil rights should highlight to everyone how fragile and new this awesome thing we’re doing in the United States is. The 19th amendment was signed in 1920. Just barely more than 100 years ago. This was merely the first step in a journey though. It took until 1962 for the last state, New Mexico, to sign law allowing for all Native Americans to be included in the vote. Another decade passed before title IX of the education amendments was signed into law in 1972, preventing discrimination in educational facilities on the basis of gender.
Barely more than 5 decades ago women were still not being afforded equality. Whether we are talking about women’s rights, equality of races or gender, or even just the right to vote, this is just 50 some odd years in coming to fruition.
Please please please, remember that this is all still very new. Exercise your right to vote, not just in the presidential election but primarily in your local elections. The electoral college makes it ESSENTIAL that you are involved on the local level, as the popular vote is not what’s counted for the presidency.
