Why lead someone on when you don’t plan on being with them?

If someone likes you and you show them signs that you like them too but you don’t plan on being with them because it would not work than why lead them on? Why continue to flirt and say things making the person think they have a chance with you? Why string them along with the games?

The attention/validation while their ego is getting a boost
Fear of commitment/not ready for commitment
Fear of being hurt if they let someone in
Biding time/keeping themself occupied until they find someone they do wanna be with

In a nutshell, immaturity, because if they were emotionally evolved enough they would do the right thing and be upfront and honest and avoid hurting someone.
It does not make them a bad person per se, we all do regretful things when we are young and don't know any better.
