Since Anorexia/Bulimia is an increasingly common issue these days I've put together some useful information on the subject.

--
What is Anorexia Nervosa?
Anorexia Nervosa is an eating condition that goes far beyond dieting, and like many addicts, anorexics deny having a problem. They see themselves as healthy, but others see the terrible damage to body and mind that anorexia causes. It is a psychological disorder usually affecting mainly girls or women, although boys or men can also suffer from it. It usually begins to occur throughout the young teenage years of 13 - 25. Once the individual begins to lose weight, this is seen as a sign achievement and control. The individual continues the endless cycle of restrictive eating often to a point close to starvation in order to feel a sense of control over the body. This cycle transforms into an obsession which is majorly hard to break out of.

People who have anorexia usually tend to hide it. Symptoms in teenagers can generally be hard to detect because some warning signs can easily be mistaken for normal adolescent development. Some people with anorexia exhibit some of the following warning signs and symptoms.

Signs and Symptoms of Anorexia:
Physical
- Extreme weight loss
- If female, your period will stop
- Over sensitivity to cold
- Lack of energy
- Thiness of hair, dry skin.
- Not seeming interested in anything
- Poor circulation, resulting in common attacks of 'pins and needles’
- Headaches/Stomachaches

Social
- Feeling anxious when eating
- Social withdrawal from activities
- Making excuses for not eating
- Depression and anxiety
- Irritability

Behavioral
- Obsession with food
- Wearing baggy clothing to disguise the amount of weight being lost
- Fear of gaining weight
- Frequently weighing oneself
- Increasing consumption of liquids

What is the cause?
No definite cause of anorexia nervosa is known as of yet, although it may be due to a combination of physical, emotional and social triggers. The precise cause for each case is highly dependant on the individual alone.

A few things that could trigger Anorexia:
- The strong desire to look and feel perfect
- Being unhappy with your body shape
- Low self-esteem
- Abuse
- Troubled family and personal relationships
- Depression, anxiety, anger, or loneliness

Treatment
There are various organisations that can help by providing information or support, including a confidential phone helpline. Even if you don't want to tell anyone you know yet, you can speak to someone in private. You don't have to give your name. Or you could go to your doctor. She/he might be very helpful. However, they may not be as well-informed as specialists eating disorders groups, and individual GPs vary in their attitudes. If you don't feel comfortable with their response, you can ring the helplines afterwards for suggestions.

It is possible to overcome and recover from Anorexia. Anorexia is difficult to overcome but it requires no less than strength, determination and courage, and with this it can be achieved.
A visit to the doctor or clinic is the first step in a process that can lead to recovery from anorexia. Among anorexics who are treated, 75 to 80 percent recover completely or make significant progress in regaining full health.

BULIMIA
Bulimia is similar to Anorexia. With bulimia, a person eats and then tries to compensate in extreme ways, such as forced vomiting or excessive exercise, to prevent weight gain. Over time, these steps can be dangerous.
To be diagnosed with bulimia, a person must be binging and purging regularly, at least twice a week for a couple of months. Binge eating is different from going to a party and "pigging out" on pizza, then deciding to go to the gym the next day and eat more healthfully. People with Bulimia eat a large amount of food (often junk food) at once, usually in secret. The person typically feels powerless to stop the eating and can only stop once he or she is too full to eat any more. Most people with bulimia then bring it all up again by vomiting, but may also use laxatives or excessive exercise.
Although anorexia and bulimia are very similar, people with anorexia are usually very thin and underweight but those with bulimia may be a normal weight or even overweight.

Signs and Symptoms of Bulimia:
- Intense fear of weight gain
- Immensely unhappy with body size, shape, and weight
- Makes excuses to go to the bathroom immediately after meals
- May only eat diet or low-fat foods (except during binges)
- Regularly buys laxatives, diuretics, or enemas
- Sends most of his or her time working out or trying to work off calories
- Withdraws from social activities, especially meals and celebrations involving food

Effects
Constant vomiting and lack of nutrients can cause these problems:
- Constant stomach pains
- Damage to a person's stomach and kidneys
- Tooth decay (from exposure to stomach acids)
- Loss of periods
- Loss of the mineral potassium (this can contribute to heart problems and even death)

Treatment
Treatment is possible and can only be achieved with no less than determination and courage.

Think someone you know has an eating problem?
Look out for the following:
- Always talking about food and calories
- Criticising own body weight/shape all the time
- Talking about other people's weight/shape a lot
- Skipping meals
- Wanting other people to eat but perhaps not themselves
- Going into the toilet loads of times – it could be they're being sick or taking laxatives
- Being withdrawn, perhaps secretive
- Being moody

Awesome thread... I'm glad someone is doing this one! I had a very good friend, when I was younger, that was anerioxic and she ended up getting into cocaine to remain "thin" at the huge weight of 87 pounds. She was 5"1" and looked horrible. I had to love her from a distance, due to her STEALING any amount of money she could find around my home to support her drug habit to stay thin. 🙄

🙂I hope your message reaches people and helps them to get help before they end up killing themselves from not eating.

I was shocked the other day when i was flipping through the channels and i came to watch the Dr.Phil show...There was a girl named Aimee on there who was 20 years old and weighed only 60 pounds. She was suffering from anorexia.I don't usually watch tv at that time of day but it caught my eye.She described that when she looked in the mirror ..she thought she looked fat. They had a picture of her as a young teenager and she had been beautiful and healthy looking. It started when she was about 12 i think it said when she had been molested .And like Candescence said she was doing it cause it was the only thing in her life she could control.I think this is a very good thread and hopefully will reach out to people ...who will see the warning signs and maybe save a few lives in the process.🙂

omg, how bizarre. im suffering from an eating disorder and I was feeling down so I just created an account on here to possibly connect with anyone who might be able to make me feel a little better or just get my mind off of it. And then the very first post I see in the Health section is this one 🙂

Everything happens for a reason, DUH. 😉

Anyways, Im starting group therapy this coming up Wednesday for Eating Disorders and Im so nervous about it. Im not sure what to expect. It sounds really pathetic, but I dont even feel like Im worthy of the therapy. I feel like people are going to think that I think that Im hot **** because Im vain and going to therapy. urgh. Maybe Im not skinny enough and my disease isnt advanced enough to get help.

Do know, that as Im writing this I do realize how weird I am...Its just something that people who havent suffered cant fully understand. Its like a parasite, it crawls up inside you and consumes your life. The bad things that happen are worse when you have this and the good things that happen are bad too because you dont allow them to be good.

I know in my heart that even though I DO NOT WANT TO GO to therapy, its the best thing for me. Its a step in the right direction towards LIFE 🙂

This is a really touchy subject. I've had bulimia for 4 years :disgust: it really sucks. I recently had to get a filling in one of my teeth in the back for tooth decay.. It's so hard to control once you get into it.

Yeah, hopefully some of those help website links will help.

My friend is Anorexic and it's hard because we don't know what to do, We tried talking to herbut it didn't help :/ And her mum has spoken to her about it but still no prevail. Now she's just wasting away and barely eating doin alot of exercise and there isn't anything we can do about it. We've told our parents but they just said to keep an eye on her. so now we just have to watch and hope she gets better.

I was bulimic in high school and stopped when I realized how much damage it does to your teeth. I want to be a dentist and I'm very driven so it was enough to make me stop but I know what you're talking about. I haven't thrown up much in a few years but I still to this day, get bad urges if I eat too much. It's like my stomach still remembers it as an option and all I can think about is how much better I'll feel afterwards. Sometimes I'll slip still :reallysad. It's a scary thing. If you ever want to talk about anything relating to the disorder pm me 🙂

Wow :reallysad. I know someone from this site who suffers from both and she is the greatest friend ever. Everything in here reminds me of her. The pins and needles, stomache pains, headaches, pergnancy issues, the shame, the only thing she has control of. :reallysad She has been this way since she was 12 and she is now 23. Although she has friends and a social life she is hiding a very lonely world from her friends and family. I am 1 of only 2 that know about her situation. I wish I could help her but she doen't want my help. She just wants someone to talk to and listen to her about her problems. It can sometimes be depressing but I still listen only because I care about her. ...........

I have been struggling, all my life....Off and on....But the last 2 years has gotten crazy

I have just begun seeking help, but I find it rough going

anyone there?

how to use this page

good post, lots of good information.Sad but one of the underlying issues is the fact that more times than not society is the cause for this behavioral disorder... the media being sexually driven, overly superficial, and the idolization of models/celebs who are skinny but not healthy.

So sad, I used to work with a girl who was so beautiful, long red hair, green eyes healthy glowing skin. I worked with her for two years, I would watch her eat like crazy then take a bunch of ex-lax at first I did not realize the problem there but after awhile she lost her beauty, became pale, hair thin, no lust for life, it was sad to watch.

this thread is amazing, its so nice to see that someone has done this and taken the time to compile it. even if you copied and pasted (which im not saying you did, i dont know) its still very kind of you to post this information for everyone. we could do with some more topical threads with this sort of information.

kudos to you! :clap

Yeah, I was bullimic soon enough into 12-13.
I just felt like throwing up was so much better than eating... and after I ate I just wanted to puke every time. My stomach didn't like food, but I knew I would never be abled to fulfill my goals in life if I wasn't healthy and strong enough to attempt them. by the time I was 14.

I still actually want to puke it up... but I hold it in.
:ashamed:

I was Bulimic like 2 years ago, but then I stopped because I saw how much damage it does to your body and everything. =/
I really hated it, I was so self-concious and still am tbh.

Bulimia really damages the esophagus. You can also rupture it and that will cause so many problems. Also it doesnt help anyone lose weight rather than maintain weight, and most start due to psychological problems.

eating disorders

i think the causes for anorexia and bulimia is the media. you see these skin and bone girls walking around all the time. and the worst part is, they actually think they look good. just remember everyone, you look beautiful no matter what people say.

oh god dude, my ex girlfriend was/is anorexic / and bulimic.

The last 3-4-5-6 months of being with her was torture on myself. Yelling at her to ****ing stop..(since long emotional talks didnt work) "OH BUT I HAD 100 CALORIES TODAY"

Yeah you're really going to **** up your metabolism and after the weights gone if you recover, youll just gain it right back.

I don't mean to sound so angry about the topic it's a really sensitive thing obviously but my point exactly, it takes a lot to help someone.. takes their own conscious decision to quit or seek assistance, kind of like quitting smoking in comparison.

anyways she lost roughly 40 or 50 pounds in one or two months. It was disgusting, and now she claims she eats and doesnt throw it up, and really i couldnt care less anymore about what she does but I have to say... somebody with those sicknesses really needs to take into consideration the impact it has on friends and family as well as their own health and well-being.

a girl at work made a comment that said "anything under 140 is anorexic" she just mad she fat.

哦哦哦哦
哦哦哦哦
哦哦哦哦

lovely input.

LOL.
anything under 105 is anorexic.
I'm 110. ;D

140+ is like PLUS SIZED.

anything under 105 is anorexic? you're a fool. please tell me you're aware people have different heights and different bodies? i'm 5'8" and 118 lbs and according to the bmi i'm 17.9, which makes me underweight, but i'm always eating and i've come to terms that it's just the way my body is. the same reason someone who's 4'11" could be 90 lbs or something. it's just the way their body is, their standpoint, i believe it's called in psychology.

edit: oops old thread, but it's stickied, so i didn't bump~ anything, not really.

This certainly brings up memories. I has anorexia nervosa and bulimia during a time in my life, I had a complex about my body and was going through depression. Eating, and vomiting were my escape form. Trust me this isn't my pity party it was a time where I learned a hell of a lot about myself and life.

Hi I suffer wit bulimia I suffer wit it daily its gotten worse in recent mths I dnt knw how to overcome it.:reallysad:

My niece suffers from anorexia. It started when she was 8 years old, and she had kept in a secret. Not all forms of it are from thinking your fat. But, most of them are. Some a really stress related and what not.

But, anways. She was hospitalized for 2 weeks, and if she couldn't finish her food within a certain time limit they would threaten her with a tube that they would stick down her throat, to feed herself for her. Its a very ugly process, really. And more than half of the girls that are anorexic/bulimic aren't even fat, or even overweight at all. And, if they do want to do it to lose weight, by the time they do it will already have spiraled completely out of control. There are also places you can go to talk to someone about it and for treatment.

I don't know if what I just said has anything to do with what this thread is about. I didn't read anything else. But, I just kinda wanted to get it off my chest anyways. Not really a lot of people I can go to without it being really sensitive for them.

I just read down some....
I am 103 pounds, and I am not anorexic.
I probably eat more than all of you combined.
I just stand at 5'0 and have an extremely fast metabolism.

I'd love to add to this, when I say that I started out
at about 140 and 5'5, when I developed a form
of anorexia and habit-forming bulimia problems.
It started because of shit like:

140+ is PLUS SIZED.

All it takes is one ignorant, uninformed statement
to trigger someone. Anyone who's in recovery
will know what I'm saying.

I did basketball, track and tennis on the side when I
was 14. I was muscular and athletic, but I wanted
to be small, no muscle- to be nothing. So it started
with me sleeping instead of eating, skipping breakfast
and substituting sugar-free gum and water for lunch.
Graduated to diuretics and laxatives.
I'm in a recovery + therapy-based program right now.

Height/weight + genetics play a huge factor in
how people look. No one with the same weight
will ever look exactly the same.

For me, I would be underweight at 120 lbs, and
overweight at 150. I always worried more about:
'At what weight will people like me the most?'

For someone who started out at your idea of obesity,
I lost 25 lbs and a great deal of respect from some of
my team mates and friends. But those same people
had to show me where I was going wrong, what I had
to learn.

To everyone suffering: you owe it to yourself to get treatment, no matter what stage you're in. It's a slippery slope- we both know that part.

And to the original quote:
I hope you pride yourself on being 5 lbs from 'anorexia'.
It's a hell of a ride.

Read a book about this once. It's called "Wasted" and was written by Marya Hornbacher. Great book. Should prove useful for anyone attempting to understand this sort of thing.

I've had a rather personal experience with anorexia. I'm really glad you put this information together. Hopefully it can inform others of anorexia and bulimia. People need to know about this. So many don't take it seriously. Anorexia and bulimia ARE addictions, just like everything else, and they need to be taken seriously. Thank you for putting this together ^_^

I struggled with bulimia through high school. No one ever knew and no one still knows. It's a hard thing to over come. People do make an influence on people. Even when you don't know it there are people watching you. Just the littlest things would effect the outcomes for me. The most important thing is that an individual is happy with themselves. Body images are not everything, what really counts is the inside. I give props to anyone who is suffering and recovering or has recover from bulimia or anorexia or any addiction <3

Hi I suffer wit bulimia I suffer wit it daily its gotten worse in recent mths I dnt knw how to overcome it.:reallysad:

Seek professional guidance...find out the meta-issues taht cause your destructive behaviour. Talking about a problem, except in a group format will not help. you admit you have a problem, now, the next step is to act by doing something positive(pro-active) see a professional A.S.A.P. It's your move.

I've had three male friends who've suffered with anorexia and bulemia.. Hmm, eight years of worry, withering, and fear.. It's no way to live but so hard to control.. Suffer in silence, a slave to our obsession and the adverts make it worse. :curse:

Starving yourself will not make you lose weight, it will make you gain. Eating in between meals with small snacks will boost your metabolism and you will be able to lose weight easier. Bulimia rots your teeth out and you can die from the harmful fluids that are up-chucked by gagging by burning the esophagus, and over time, it can lead to a deadly infection. Most of these two eating disorders happen when a girl hits puberty, and she begins to feel self-concious about her appearance. It gets pretty severe and it kills a lot of people each year. When you think you are helping your body, your only hurting it.

You're just repeating things that I'm sure everyone in this thread already know.
It's an outright lie that starving yourself won't make you lose weight. If it didn't
work, none of these people would have tried it or kept doing it.

Anorexia or bulimia can't be quickly dismissed with "Go eat a small snack in between
meals, you'll lose weight and maybe stop feeling like you're ugly." I doubt that anyone
who's been through this could say it would have been easy to stop, right after
learning about all of the bad things these disorders do to their bodies. It's a loss
of control.

Goinawal needs to go talk to a professional. Talk to your parents, your best friend,
find somebody who will listen to what you have to say and then help you find
either a recovery program or a therapist.

Either way. Repeating the consequences of these disorders does not answer
her question. /rantover

pro-ana/mia sites

pro-ana/mia sites

All over the internet, there's websites for people, especially women (mostly young girls) to go to and look at pictures of anorexic individuals, called "thinspiration," there's also textual thinspiration, like "letters" from their "friend Ana" or "Mia." Right now the biggest proponent of "thinspo" seems to be tumblr. I feel like if I had not come across the "thinspo" when I was younger, I might not have been bulimic, or at least not to the same extent. These sites also give tips for how to be anorexic and/or bulimic, and how to keep it a secret from loved ones. I know it might be considered wrong to totally ban these types of sites, due to freedom of speech and press, but it would be fantastic if the government would try to make this "thinspiration" only available to those 18+, when hopefully, they're old enough to make a wise decision. I'd love to hear your opinions on the matter.

**** that. I'd have them taken down regardless, it's absolutely disgusting that people actually promote eating disorders and encourage the youth to try them out. Though not all thinspiration blogs on tumblr are bad ones - some of them do offer some helpful tips like eating right, exercising, and providing things like clothes-shopping as motivation to do those things - it's the fact that negative ones exist and pressure younger people into attempting to develop eating disorders.

As I'm sure everyone in this thread already knows, no type of eating disorder is good for you under any circumstance. Why someone would intentionally and purposely wish to try this sort of thing and flaunt it about is beyond me (apart from those who're pressured, of course), considering that probably a lot of girls who have these disorders don't feel all that great about themselves even if they lose a lot of weight + it has many negative health effects to your body. (I am aware not all are pressured into certain eating disorders such as anorexia which can potentially be attributed to chemical imbalance within the brain).

I hope anyone who has any type of eating disorder tries their best to overcome it and take steps into going into recovery if not already there. You can do it, and you'll feel a lot better. xo

Attempting not to sound insensitive, I think that anorexia nervosa and bulimia are morbid and disgusting.

Being thin does not make you attractive; in fact, from my point of view, quite the opposite. I really can't understand why anyone would want to be thin. It just looks horrible and it's unhealthy.

I guess that people are just crazy. I mean, why can't you be more like Brigid Berlin? Now there's an attractive woman. 😱

I think it's just as mean to make fun of someone for being thin as it is to make fun of someone for being overweight. Either way, commenting on someone else's body like that is a little unnecessary of you.

It's not a fantastic idea to tell someone who has an already damaged self-esteem that you think they look 'horrible' and 'unhealthy', by the way. Just a thought. :dontknow:

100% know what you are talking about.

This is a really touchy subject. I've had bulimia for 4 years :disgust: it really sucks. I recently had to get a filling in one of my teeth in the back for tooth decay.. It's so hard to control once you get into it.

Take note that Anorexia nervosa and Bulimia nervosa are both mental disorders. It’s more complicated than just choosing not to eat a sandwich even when you’re so hungry, it’s not something you can treat overnight. Those eating disorders (form of self-starvation) is as bad as Binge Eating Disorder (compulsive overeating or consuming abnormal amounts of food while feeling unable to stop and a loss of control). Eating disorders have many causes, it can be triggered by traumatic life experiences of body shaming, fatshaming, bullying, or any abuse that has something to do with a person’s body or appearance. These are serious mental illnesses and not just a mere lifestyle choice. Majority of the clients I have handled in the past had a mentality that self-starvation is the only way to lose weight because in our society, losing weight equates to becoming acceptable and becoming sexier. It’s the pressure that they experience from society, the people that surrounds them and their own selves. They always feel like it’s never enough, that they are not enough, that they should keep pushing themselves over the limit because it’s the only way they will be accepted. Someone who is suffering from eating disorders often have bad physical appearances yes, it’s not disgusting, it’s an evidence, it’s like a sign saying “I am battling myself, I am having a mental and body warfare” and sometimes it’s a cry for help because oftentimes they do not willingly and voluntarily seek help from people. Eating disorders are disgusting, that I can agree with but you know what else is disgusting? Body shaming. It is damaging in any form, skinny shaming caused by eating disorders is never a good thing either. It’s not as easy as telling someone to eat just because they’re skinny, if eating for them is such an easy thing to do then they would’ve done it already but that’s the thing, they are unable to! Because it is an ongoing battle for them. So never tell someone to who has an eating disorder to just eat so they can gain weight because they look disgusting because believe it or not, it is not something that they can do easily just because you tell them to. Let us be more understanding, before we comment on these issues, let’s try and educate ourselves first and learn more information about these topics rather than just blindly judging. So sorry it's long haha

I think bulimia it's sooooo bad(((
It's not just bad, it's really dangerous. It's a serious illness. It can even be deadly or shorten one's life. Bulimia affects the brain that can cause anxiety or depression. The online pharmacy site states that the health risks of bulimia include cardiac complications, digestive irregularity, fatigue and muscle weakness, organ damage and peripheral neuropathy. This all scares me a lot. So please, be careful folks.

A very close friend of mine had it and it was a nightmare for her and her family. It also took her a long time to recover. She still takes some meds and vitamins from CanadaDrugs, few months after she cured from this awful disease.
