To be homophobic is to be derogatory (insulting or disrespectful) towards someone who is gay.

Now, there are certain things that a blatantly obvious to almost anyone as being homophobic, such as a certain word we aren't allowed to say beginning with F, while other things are more dependant on the person receiving it, which makes it hard for a list so to say of all the things that are derogatory.

So its usually best (given the circumstances) to find out what the person you a talking to is and isn't cool with, thats how you find the limits, cause someone came up to you spewing things that you personally may find offensive, chances are you would "shut down their opinion".

I believe that at its core, homophobia is rooted in fear, prejudice, or discomfort toward people who identify as LGBTQIA+. But the boundaries can get blurry, and it’s not always about blatant hatred or bigotry. Sometimes, what one person sees as a valid opinion or joke might feel harmful or exclusionary to someone else.

We could say that homophobia is any action, behavior, or belief that contributes to the marginalization or mistreatment of LGBTQIA+ individuals, whether intentional or not. It’s about being mindful, respectful, and willing to have conversations like these. And I would say that being vigilant doesn’t mean policing every word, but more about creating a space where people can share opinions while being mindful of how they impact others.

I have a specific question/comment about this^

Insulting/disrespectful seems to be very subjective - and based on the recipient perspective ( or observer)

I want to use part of an example Ive seen, that is a example of a statement that several say is homophobic.

"In my opinion.....The LGBTQ community on here get triggered by religious people 😁 boohoo." , <-- please explain to me why- like im a 6th grader, -how that is phobic?

Indeed, it is very much subjective. That was kinda the point I was making, and if that didn't come through clear enough then atleast im saying it now, Crystal clear.

This is a perfect example of why such a thing absolutely is subjective. To those who claim it to be homophobic, I can absolutely see why they would, the person who said it seems to me (considering I can only see this message) to be trying to solicite a response from the very people he's attempting to poke fun at, which, for some fits the definition of being insulting or disrespectful

Personally, would I take that as homophobic? No, just someone trying to be clever, but again, I absolutely see why some would.

To get specific about why the statement might be seen as homophobic: it's not necessarily the words themselves, but the dismissive attitude behind them. Saying "boohoo" or "triggered" downplays the feelings of the LGBTQIA+ community, kinda implying that they’re being overly sensitive or dramatic for reacting to something that might genuinely hurt or affect them.

And I don’t think it’s homophobic in the sense of outright hatred, but it dismisses or mocks a group’s emotional response to something that might challenge their identity or rights (the church). So in that way, it can be seen as adding to an environment that often minimizes or disregards the struggles LGBTQIA+ peeps face, thus indirectly reinforcing homophobia.

Soooo to explain it like you would to a 6th grader (I suck at talking to kids so here goes nothing): Imagine if some butthead said something hurtful to you, and when you got upset, they just rolled their little eyes and said, "Oh, stop being so sensitive." It’s not the words themselves that are necessarily homophobic, but the attitude behind them that can make people feel dismissed or disrespected.

Puffer, can we call it views on Anti-LGBTQI rhetoric, rather than just homophobia? We need a broader term, because I’m pretty sure some will think spewing anti-trans slurs and propaganda is OK because it’s not against gays.

I say anything that dehumanises them should be considered actionable, be it someone using the ‘it’s a sickness’ argument or some creepers thinking that the ‘P’ word is in some nonsensical way connected to LGBTQI people.

Now, I know those animals would be automatically removed from the chat and banned, but I’m talking about those that say that the LGBTQI people are like them or condone their actions in any manner, like a certain now banned nut did that caused me to lose my shit and get banned myself.

I know my opinions and views don’t automatically align with the opinions and views of others, but I pay people the same respect they pay me, be they Christian, Mormon, Islamic, right-wing, left-wing, gay, lesbian, transgender or heterosexual.

People are sometimes just too sensitive, absolutely. But also, people are sometimes too bigoted and insensitive.

Let’s just remember, behind every keypad, keyboard and screen is a human being, with their own uniqueness: thoughts, emotions and beliefs.

"To be homophobic is to be derogatory insulting or disrespectful towards someone that is gay" <----- this kind of ignores the basic fact that most people are insulting and disrespectful and say derogatory things about everyone..

From her profile........IN MY OPINION, people in the LGBTQ community are the most judgemental hypocritical people I've ever met. In my opinion, they play the homophobia card all the time. They think they deserve special treatment just because they're gay.

Gay people will never get any sympathy from me. They're as bad as black people who play the racism card when they get held accountable for their actions. They can fųck off.

Hi Hannah, would you mind adding "in my opinion"to your posts as getting lots of reports, thanks and welcome back btw.

HI Kim, the OP makes clear why I made this thread. Could you please explain to me, like im a 6th grader- why what you just posted is homophobic?

(This is my thread btw) so let's keep on topic.

EDIT: how is saying " LGBTQ are judgemental" etc homophobic?

It can be considered homophobic because it relegates all members of the LGBTQ community to a harmful stereotype and implies they all share characteristics because of their sexuality.

Imagine the same used in terms of race. "All black people are...". It fails to recognise that all members of a community are individual people with individual thought processes.

Holy snappin’ duck shit. That’s just - I have no words.

These are the kinds of views and opinions that should be kept in your own brain. Sometimes I think some Christians are not so Christian, and I feel they make me see red and maybe label all Christians that way in my mind. But, I try to keep that inside as much as possible. I definitely don’t write it on my effing profile!

lesbian here 🙋🏼‍♀️

its homophobic bc its specifically designed to antagonize homosexuals…

that post is the equivalent of taking a swastika, & saying to a jewish person while waving it in their face; * oh does this offend you?? well theres free speech in america, so too bad *

even though free speech only counts when its spoken out against the government…

its also equal to taking a cross, & lighting it on fire on someones front lawn; just bc its a religious symbol protected by religious freedom doesnt make it any less criminal, in that act its an accessory to a hate crime 💁🏼‍♀️

look, i dont care; but it is what it is, & obvious to anyone why such a post was grossly homophobic especially coming from someone with known hate crime charges related to homosexuals…

& frankly, having her put in my opinion doesnt make it any less homophobic, just makes it more fuckin’ stupid; obviously its her opinion, her homophobic opinion 🤷🏼‍♀️

peace,
god-bless 🕊️🕊️

Also it depends on how people take or read the words.

A gay calling another gay a poof etc = non offensive

A gay calling another gay an aids ridden dirty twat. That’s homophobic. At least in my eyes, someone might agree “poof” is offensive.

HI Fin n thank you. It was just intended as an example, it's not specifically about that post - personally Ive grappled with this what is homophobia for quite some time. Can you offer a definition of homophobia?
