Why Old-School Online Hangouts Beat Modern Dating Apps for Real Connections

Hey everyone,

I’m so over modern dating apps and their whole superficial vibe. I read this cool quote from Wes Kusmaul, who started the Delphi social network back in the ‘80s: “In 1981, I launched the world's first online encyclopedia, which soon became the Delphi social network. Before we sold the business to Rupert Murdoch's News America Corp. a decade later, hundreds or thousands of couples had met on Delphi. Many of them later married.”

Delphi wasn’t even a dating site—just text-only clubs where people connected over passions and values, not looks. Talking about your height or whatever was straight-up uncool. Meanwhile, today’s apps are like a meet-market, all about swiping on pics and bios, built to keep you hooked, not to find someone real. It’s so shallow and doesn’t even work for real connections. This Delphi Effect thing, where it’s all about who you are inside, feels like what dating’s missing. So I was thinking, could going a step back really be the solution, because that seems way more genuine than what today's dating apps are doing.

I remember AOL and YAHOO - where we just had a screenname and not much else. Sure, we could exchange pics, but we made better connections without knowing what each other looked like. I really miss those days. Great insight, thanks for sharing.

I think there's an online chat site called ICQ back in 1999. It's one of the few ways to chat online. You have to know on how create a chat room first & inviting people from your friends online on your chat list.

I've enjoyed reading the articles on the Dream Singles blog because they focus on building meaningful relationships through international dating sites rather than just casual dating. The advice about communication, cultural understanding, and long-distance relationships is practical and encouraging. I found several helpful tips that improved my confidence when connecting with someone from another country. It's a useful resource for people who are serious about finding a genuine and lasting relationship.
I think you make a great point. Real connections often happen when people focus on shared interests, values, and meaningful conversations rather than appearance alone. My own successful international relationship started with long discussions and getting to know each other as people first. Photos matter eventually, but they shouldn't be the foundation. The Delphi approach may seem old-fashioned, yet it highlights something many modern dating platforms have forgotten: genuine human connection.
