Protecting "half the planet" also comes with lots of advantages. I can't put a dollar amount on it, but it is definitely not going to be trivial. As mentioned in another thread, at the very least you have created a nice market for all your shiny military kit (which, by the way, is at risk of collapsing, as Europe is quickly rediscovering that it can be actually quite good at making weapons).
I'd agree with you on that, if we had a functional layer to deal with global affairs. Institutions like the United Nations, WHO and WTO are a start, but they are far from perfect. So, sure, you could retreat to your corner of the world, but border-crossing issues are not going to magically disappear, when you stop looking at them. Pandemics, disruptive technologies, climate change, international terrorism, wars, all these things are going to need some global leadership and, if ignored, will eventually come crashing through your front door. I, for one, would like to have western style democracies lead the way in dealing with them, rather than autocratic regimes like China and Russia. If the United States is walking away, i suppose, it is going to be left to the EU and friends. Now, our track record isn't great, but hey, perhaps this time we'll get it right (somebody just needs to make sure that Germany doesn't get overexcited again 😉 ).

Yes, those are all real issues and some of those problems we have over here as well. Housing shortage, for example, is pretty horrific here. Knowing that, doesn't help you much, but perhaps you can find some comfort in the fact that this is something we all struggle with.
Then, i really do hope it gets fixed and there we can find common ground. But, you and i fundamentally disagree on who you should employ to fix it. In my opinion, Trump is going to make things way, way worse. Others e.g. have pointed out the corrupt nature of his government. If you still want to solely focus on the financial side, as mentioned before, our participation in NATO means that we do buy a lot of american weapon systems, creating a whole bunch of jobs state side. Now, i'll admit, i don't know what brings you more financially in the end, but it is just not as simple as "base cost money, we are in debt, so let's leave".

Creating independences is a way to keep us all safer. It was the founding principle of the precursor to the EU; interlink those industries that are needed for war over multiple countries, so waging it would become really difficult. It worked for the EU, i am hoping, it can work for the world too. At the moment, obviously, we are seeing mixed results.
Trust me, i understand that no country acts purely out of altruism. Which is actually my point, the US benefits when Europe is safe and free and there was a time when it understood that. Also, i don't understand why that dream needs to be just american. Why can't it be "the western dream" (other than that it doesn't roll of the tongue as nicely), or just the dream for all of humanity. It's the experiences of a dutch journalist working in the middle east. Among the many anecdotes, you'll find him discussing how hard it is to 1) find the truth at all and 2) report on all its complexity and nuances in 30 seconds on the 8 o'clock news.
Look, as i have mentioned, i don't know that much about American internal politics or policies. But i am guessing, is that you don't need to rip all your treaties apart or throw up trade barriers to have a better life for your citizens. In fact, i think it might even harm them in the long run, if you do. Really, take a moment to watch a documentary about life in, i don't know, the Netherlands or Germany. There is financial stress here too, sure, but it seems of an entirely different order.

During the Cold War, we had quite the military. Perhaps still not as impressive as the US, but remember, Europe was cut in two and needed to be rebuilt from the ashes of our bombed cities and infrastructure.
I wouldn't entirely leave Putin out of it, though. Starting a war next door is what kicked off the frenzy. Almost immediately after Russia invaded Ukraine, Germany's chancellor basically declared "we're going to be sooo back" in a speech that is referred to as the "Zeitenwende speech", translated as "historic turningpoint speech". But yes, Trump is not just adding fuel on the fire, he is starting entirely new fires as well. And if he did that in peacetime, it would have been bad enough. But he is doing it in a way that emboldens our opponents, while an active war is raging.
Oh, South Korea has a pretty impressive army. The US is just showing, to the whole world, that it acts as a mafia boss, rather than an ally. It will make everyone, friend and foe, distrustful of you. That is going to hurt you, eventually.
If that is the plan (and, it's not), you are basically deliberately provoking wars between your allies and their opponents, only then to step back from the mess you created. The whole world will have justified contempt for you. No, there is no 4D-plan here. Mostly just sheer blinding incompetence, mixed in with short-sightedness and delusions of grandeur.
Then, have better institutions, have better press, protest, make them sign laws that prevent that kind of thing. Try to find a way out of a world, where we are just ingesting what the algorithm of a tech company tells us to ingest. Democracy only works, if you make your politicians accountable. Yes, it's hard and, honestly, some of that stuff happens here too, so, unfortunately, no-one has a foolproof method yet. Having said that, i'm pretty sure, the path you are going on, is heading in the wrong direction. Now, we have our own little Trumps running around... i just hope, we are not going to follow your example.
