I haven't tried Beneful, but I have heard decent things about it.
Food!
My vet has this list of dog foods to avoid, if possible. The one to avoid the most is Pedigree. He said it's the equivalent of eating burgers and fries everyday.
Others include: Beneful, Purina, Alpo, Bil Jac, Eukanuba, Iams, etc. If you could find the dog food at your local store like Vons, Ralphs, etc. chances are it's not the best food for your dog. These tend to be super fatty and contain byproducts (which is basically the leftover of say chicken, the stuff they do not feed to humans) and tons of potatoes/corn.
I use frontline spray and also bathe animals in dishwashing liquid (sounds crazy I know but it kills the fleas and it is gentle on their skin)One of my dogs is having a massive shedding problem right now and a flea problem. I used some spray on him earlier and then brushed him. The spray killed the fleas, but it smelled horrendous and I don't want anything too harsh on his skin. He stopped nibbling at his skin, which is good but does anyone know of anything else that could work?
Ultimately though, it's a test. You're probably going to have to try a couple, because what may be good for one dog, may not be good for another and who knows, Pedigree might work for your dog. What you do want to look for in dog food is: barley, brown rice, millet, bananas, cranberries, carrots, etc.
Beneful's line of 'Healthy Harvest' I think it's called is decent. I didn't say the best, I said decent. It does contain corn though, but most premium dog foods do as well. Iams is also on that list, but I used to feed my dogs Iams and they're still alive and kicking.
I also said this:
I also fed my past Dalmatian Pedigree his whole life, but now I avoid it. It worked for him, but not for my current dogs.
Yeah, it'd have to be a natural one, otherwise it'd throw off the pH balance of their coat/skin. I usually use oatmeal shampoo on them, because it helps with itchiness and their seasonal skin allergies.
wow lots of differing opinions
i had great danes they live till they were 13 the breeders back then reckon 7 was the average age
wow they ate human chocolate omg
they ate raw meat omg
they drank milk
my other little dog that lived till 13 ate chocolate
he ate raw meat
he drank milk
he loved drinking coffee
vets try to push their own brands onto people
you can wash your dog in *eucalyptus wool wash* the stuff you use for clothes
fleas dont like eucalyptus .
leaves them soft and fluffy too
and of course you have to treat where the animal sleeps as well.
derrrrrrrrrrr
yes they have dried pigs ears for dogs to chew on
good for teething
my great dane was a puppy till he was at least two he used the corner of my dishwasher as a chew toy
I had a three legged cattle dog until he was 18 ๐ He ate chocolate, drank coke, ate potato chips and hated dog food. He was the (physically) healthiest little shit too.
People worry too much.
That's old. o_o
Next dog I get, you're gonna give me a list of how the 18 year old dog was treated, in perfect detail. ๐ฑYep ๐ We took him for a walk every day, he went for a run every weekend and always had plenty of water.
I guess it also depends on the individual.
My Grandma had a Poodle for 15 years.. The poodle and I shared SO many chocolates every weekend when I was there.
Then she had a King Charles Cavalier that she gave all the right food to, did basically everything that "professionals" said to do and bam, died at 8.
Some of you really shouldn't own pets and this is me being as kind as possible.
why because we fed them what others say they shouldnt eat?
they lived a long time. and they were well treated and loved. who are
you to presume otherwise.?
dogs before humans had them as pets lived on a diet of raw meat.
our dogs all loved having milk. the vet encouraged it for our great danes,
we used to make them calcium milkshakes for their bones. as they grow so
fast.
buttttttttttttt you know everything hey chelle ๐ you are a mod so you
must ๐
vets and animal product companies dont want you giving human stuff
so they have a market for their own products.
my dane ate a whole packet of those mini easter eggs once , he found
them , didnt know he was eating them. but nothing i could do anyway
closet vet was 1 1/2 hours away by plane. and planes only a couple of
times a week.
like i said average years for danes were 7 he lived to 13
Did I mention names? No. You're not feeding them anything TOO bad, certainly not chips or soda (both of which aren't good for humans so imagine with CANINES, good lord). You also don't purposely feed them chocolate, you said they got into the bag and you didn't know.
Right there, the bold bit..well, I have to disagree with you. Before they weren't pets. In fact, they weren't even domesticated! They're descendents of wolves, who yes, eat raw meats. Dogs were domesticated some 14,000 years ago or something, so obviously a lot has changed, both genetically and physically.
Diet plays a role in how long a dog will live, sure, but I'd like to think genetics play a larger role. Think it was Laurenn who said a King Charles Cavalier was fed all the "right" things. That breed, in general, has a lot of genetic problems. Their average lifespan is something like 9-13 years so it's expected.
Also, my knowledge about dogs has nothing to do with being a mod. I don't claim to know everything, but I'd like to think I certainly know more than the average person. I've grown up around dogs my whole life, I read dog books, I watch dog documentaries. I'm a nerd.

Adam, congrats! I know how long you've wanted one for lmao. Is it a puppy or an adult dog? If it's a puppy, you can definitely try puppy training classes. If it's an adult, you can probably try doggie daycare, but they'll let you know if your dog is really aggressive or not. I'm positive some doggie daycares also offer adult training classes. Dog parks as well! You just have to introduce him to new people, new places, new things and new dogs so he doesn't become afraid of new things and then becomes aggressive.
I adopted Dodger when he was one and we already had Brownie, who was five. At first Brownie hated him, but now they definitely tolerate each other. They sleep together, run around together, but they do have their occasional fights, which is normal considering Dodger thinks he's the alpha male and Brownie is a brat so eh.
