If memory serves me right (and it may not because..age) there used to be a section specifically for news and current affairs. I dunno why it doesn't exist anymore but if it did, it would be topic appropriate for all the threads like this one and others regarding the election, Israel/Hamas war etc . I noticed other sections like Roleplay existing and its as dead as my love life. (Kidding nothing is as dead as that).
There was a politics forum too I think

Cleaning up the title 🙂

This from France panning the opening of the olympics. Many people are being quite critical of the opening. Should politics, religion sex; or orientation have any place with international sports?

Its very easy to be critical, Im also interested in hearing those who think the opening ceremony wasn't "the worst in olympic history."

edit: ive chosen this report because it has the least inflammatory language.

Yes they did and it was pretty popular.

“World Events, Politics & News” it was called.
Used to have an Irish girl called Katie post multiple articles daily.

It should be put back. Oh, and LINKS ALLOWED to support the news being spoken about.

I’m selectively boycotting much of the Olympics because they’ve allowed a convicted child rapist to compete so I didn’t watch the opening ceremony.

Politics: seems to be a lot of far right politicians making a fuss as they always do, about anything they can latch on to like the leeches many of them are. I don’t agree with many of the far right policies but I don’t think it would be right to stop them commenting on news shows and talk shows just because there’s an international sporting event, as long as they keep their racism and related abhorrent views to themselves.

Religion: I don’t see a problem with allowing some religious expression. Religion in many countries is becoming less relevant so giving religion an international platform probably isn’t a bad idea. It gives them a lot of free publicity

Sex: I read that the athletes’ village provide condoms free of charge to avoid pregnancy and STDs. I also heard this year there’s some suggestion that they’ve made “anti-sex beds” for the athletes but Tom Daley posted a silly video showing that it’s just a rumour and demonstrated that sex is probably possible on those beds.

I also don’t think that athletes should abstain from sex just because they’re competing (apart from the child rapist. He should abstain for life - preferably by having chemical castration that prevents him from doing it). I’m pretty sure having sex-starved athletes probably isn’t good for them when trying to compete especially in the sports where they’re wearing very little. Nobody wants to see someone being aroused while they’re mid-dive. Now I’ve said that I’m thinking that sex should probably be encouraged to prevent anyone getting an eyeful.

Spectators being part of whichever international sporting event it is, should also not have to abstain. Doing so would create tension that could spill into disorder.

Sexual orientation: this goes hand in hand with sex. I’m all for anyone being able to have sex during the Olympics or any other sporting event regardless of their sexual orientation whether that’s on the “anti-sex” beds or any other beds or places where it’s possible and legal to have sex. I don’t think they should flip from straight to gay or vice-versa because of the Olympics.

TL;DR: don’t stop people having sex, don’t silence religion, don’t completely silence the far-right

It's only a crime if it can be proven you were doing it to willfully promote antisemitism and didn't actually believe the things you were saying.
(3.1) No person shall be convicted of an offence under subsection (2.1)

  • (a) if they establish that the statements communicated were true;
  • (b) if, in good faith, they expressed or attempted to establish by an argument an opinion on a religious subject or an opinion based on a belief in a religious text;
  • (c) if the statements were relevant to any subject of public interest, the discussion of which was for the public benefit, and if on reasonable grounds they believed them to be true; or
  • (d) if, in good faith, they intended to point out, for the purpose of removal, matters producing or tending to produce feelings of antisemitism toward Jews.

still an extreme overreach by any government to threaten prison for people expressing their beliefs and opinions, no matter how shite they are. and for them to decide whether or not you truly believe them.
It ends up as a weapon that government will use if you say things that they don't like.

I didn't realize Canada even had the internet.
Don't mess with Canada..they will give you a stern looking at!

I wonder what the outcome would be if you mocked other religions during the Olympics ?

I want to know why Israel couldn’t wear the yellow pin thing, yet (as mentioned previously) the Dutch team has a nonce and will be surrounded by some of the people he is a danger to.

You don't need a bed to have Sex wouldn't stop anything
Very important 🌎 issue. I made a thread because this type of thing deserves its own thread https://forum.chat-avenue.com/threads/swingathon-and-the-like.951115/

Apparently they don’t allow any political things at the Olympics

omg that's quite alarming- what country is the creep from?

What is your thinking of them having children in the drag queen act?

The Netherlands

In August 2014 van de Velde, then 19 years old, raped a 12-year-old girl he had met on F who lived in Milton Keynes, England. He travelled to her home and, when her mother was out, gave her alchol and then raped her several times at her home as well as near Furzton Lake which was nearby. The victim would eventually go on to self harm and once overdosed.

A study has found that a blood test can determine with 90% accuracy whether cognitive decline is due to Alzheimer’s.

Scientists are hopeful that by identifying this horrible disease earlier, it could pave the way for a cure. 💜

Dr. Maria Carrillo, chief science officer of the Alzheimer’s Association, has said that the hope is it can be used in primary care in the same way as taking a cholesterol test

Edna O’Brien has passed away at the age of 93.

She was an Irish author whose books were banned in Ireland and even publicly burned by a local parish priest.

To quote the New Statesman:

“With every aspect of women’s lives invaded by, and subject to, the whims of a state machine ideologically opposed to female emancipation – under the direction of a meticulously prurient Catholic Church – O’Brien’s invocation of female characters who dared desire more from life than domestic and sexual servitude, emotional disaffection and intellectual abnegation, was nothing short of revolutionary.”

What a trailblazer. Rest in Peace 💛

the whims of a state machine ideologically opposed to female emancipation
I assume by "state machine" they mean government. Do they give any specific examples of that opposition, or is the parrish preist the example?

edit: all I can find is "pulpit" opposition for publishing book(s) on sex (re women) in the 1940's
