Conspiracy Theories are all about creating (false)meaning and a Sense of “Control” in their believers. There rarely is a simple explanation for why the various “things” happen in the world, and because only people who have devoted significant amounts of their lives to the study of a subject are able to really understand such things, the “regular person” (usually without a College or especially Graduate Education, but not always) feels out of control, and believe that those who do know or those who are perceived “different” from them, are somehow taking advantage of their ignorance. The most common Conspiracy Theory in Times of Crisis( whether actual or perceived) is a variation of the Scapegoat, typically Anti-Islam (in the West) Anti-Semitic or forms of a Super-Powerful Cabal that controls the world. To put it very simply: People want things to have “Meaning” even if they don’t “make sense.” That tends to make them vulnerable to accepting Conspiracy Theories. Such theories are “Satisfying” to such people, as they provide, at the very least a “Reason” or “Meaning” for why the believers are suffering, when in reality that reason and meaning are both false and, as a bonus, most Conspiracy Theories also pander to people’s pre-existing biases, bigotries, and hatreds. The more of which a person possesses (biases), the more susceptible they are to such Conspiracism. The same goes for the 9/11 attacks. Can’t blame an entire group of people for something that was done by a small group of extremists, which are to be found in all religions and political ideologies. The way the West (the US and Europe) has historically conducted itself around the world and has meddled in the affairs of countries it should have stayed out off (starting with colonialism), did however play a role in facilitating fundamentalism. a similar thing is happening at the moment regarding the oppression of the Palestinians by the Israeli government and most Western leaders still remaining on cordial terms with the Israeli government (with the exception of Ireland and Spain), when what is going on is clearly a violation of Palestinian human rights by the Israeli government. Palestinian people, who have lived as second class citizens and were forced to live in confined spaces in their own country since 1948, are now being wiped out, with the death toll standing at almost 30000 people (and still rising) since the Israeli government invaded the Gaza last October with another 394 in the West Bank (and still rising) There’s a reason a lot of people hate the West and the US in particular.
