In the spirit of the thread then , I would say no one under 18 should moderate General Chat. The reason is that some of the users who are VIP do get away with much more including harassing underage females and probably underage boys too. You get the response when you bring up this. "Well this screen shot does not prove that my buddy Low Key is a pedo. All this says is he wants to ram his hot rod into her garage. I mean I know that sounds bad but he could just really be into cars and parking them.
I think rooms with a history of protecting underage users it is fine for someone under 18 to mod them. General Chat is not one of those rooms.

So now it’s 17? Let’s be fair here and decide on an age. 17 or 18?

A lot of countries around the world and states of USA it’s 16 to legally ‘do the deed.’ The 18+ is a federal US law that applies to ‘adult content’ in the USA, and generally sites hosted in the States (admittedly, this is also pushed onto other countries around the world because, well … ‘Mericaaa!)

If we’re going to start talking about legality vs morality, let’s compare apples with apples and oranges to oranges. Stop cherry picking between the two.

From a legal standpoint, this site seems to pick and chose laws from international standards and US standards, so it’s a bit of a grey area anyways.

From a moral perspective, I’m about 7 months off being the age of consent in my country. Once I’m 16, I can legally have sex, but because of America, I can’t legally go to a room and discuss it? Because it’s only immoral in their eyes, not my country of origin.

So, can some of you hardass naysayers tell me, are we talking legally? Morally? Is it 17? 18? Why was it decided to be ok for some rooms to be 17 but not be a problem? Can someone please explain all these conundrums to me?
Ok I’ll do my best here 🙂. I’ll start with the 17 vs 18. In America the legal age of consent in most states is 18, some 16, I’ve even heard it’s 14 in a few. And yea it varies from country to country of course, like where you live for example. However as I’m sure you’re aware Chat Avenue uses 18 as its standard bearer.

That then brings us to the morality question. What’s moral to one culture may be immoral to another, so it’s a tough question to give a definitive answer to. However in most all societies/cultures it’s considered immoral to engage in sexual relations with young teens. That goes back even to ancient times. So adults have always made it their responsibility to protect kids from those who would look to harm you. Even in your country it would be illegal for an adult to engage in inappropriate behavior with you right now.

So it’s with this in mind that many, not all, but many adults here have strong feelings and reservations about minors moderating chat rooms containing adult content. I’ve said it before, but it’s the job of adults to keep young people from harm and being exposed to things they shouldn’t be seeing yet. This site doesn’t allow adults to creep on minors, spread CP etc because not only is it illegal but morally wrong for those minors to see it. So if underage users are allowed to mod, then by default you’re gonna see those things.

Another issue at hand is parental consent. If underage users are allowed to mod without their parents consent, then Chat Avenue and any admin is responsible for those kids viewing CP, porn etc. Things any reasonable parent would never allow their kid to be exposed to. The risks outweigh any possible reward. So the age of 18 was set here. A definitive age had to be set as the benchmark.

It's a sad reality, but I have absolutely no doubt that the content a mod is exposed to in Kids Chat is worse than the content they would be exposed to in General Chat.
This ^^

There was zero “outrage” before. So, why now?

Rhetorical, of course, but if anyone can make it make sense, I’m all for a factual, non-opinionated response.

I can only speak for myself here. But the honest answer here is I never paid attention to kids chat. I never saw any complaints here on forums about creeps, peds, pervs, cp etc on there. Not to say they didn’t exist I just never saw them. And honestly because of that I always figured it was moderated well enough that they were weeded out. It’s only now that I’m hearing that it was/is a land of pedos. I knew there was one or two underage mods there but I didn’t think that that’s what they were dealing with. Had I known that I would have been outspoken a long time ago.

Once again I think it depends on the room culture. When ******** like Low Key harass underage girls and the response given by admin is "Well Low Key is a VIP and I don't see that as unsavory", then that makes me worried that though such behavior is not encouraged it is not really discouraged. Again not in General Chat too many creeps with tons of access to underage is why I think the mods should be over 18.

Well said.

Underage users are going to see those things whether they mod or not.

Sam is such an ass. I mean you have mod experience and a good record. You should be given full mod colors but Sammy likes his power trips and to think he does something of importance. Good luck and do watch yourself.
You always make me so chuffed. Thank you. And I survived 8 months in KC with no ‘colours’ (I guess you mean here?).

I have a lot going on in my life atm, and I’m not actually a ‘relief mod’ per se, he made it clear not to call myself that. I will be going away for a while starting next month, so I doubt you’ll see me, if at all, until probably mid to late October.

I just wish you well. I have not chatted there for a while. The last time I had a relief mod ride me the entire time I was there when I was trying to chat with a couple of the long standing ******** playing catch up but the relief mod would not leave me alone.

I feel like people under the age of 18 should be mods but be trained by the already mods on the Chatroom who are 18, To make them learn and teach them about how to safely handle nasty people how to kick people out and find a reason if y’all do that already then your not doing good at it I seen mods not doing there job and some people who are under 18 see what goes on in these Chatrooms when there’s no mod and we want to make a difference. Us kids should get a harder application with more questions on why we want to be a mod and get trained harder
But that’s the work part of it

The things on the Chatrooms said that are for sure nasty is definitely not child friendly I think we should have in the application post for saying they are opened should be a TW at the top that’s says about the stuff that is said the bad things and you must be thick skinned and make sure this stuff doesn’t effect them I know your hearing this from a kid no **** but please hear us out some of us wanna make a different on here.

Sincerely
Sammy

It often takes some time for a new moderator’s status to be reflected on their forums account.
Additionally, you clearly have issues with certain people but this thread was created to move away from talking about specific mods or specific rooms and have a broader more general debate on this topic.

But! And here’s the but...users can put those things on ignore. A mod/staff member can’t. They’re forced to deal with it. Therein lies the difference.

This is true. But! The only way you know to put someone who is posting that stuff on ignore is if you see it first. So they are going to see it regardless. Maybe that’s semantics but it’s my point. As weak or strong as it may be 😂
